Biography

Charleen Bertsch is the descendant of a Huguenot emigrant.

Charleen is the daughter of Tony Bertsch and Dorothy Struckmeier. She always loved the old photos her mother had, and wondered where her family came from. Her mother gave her the photos and she made copies for her siblings. Charleen and her sister Gin are the only ones in the family that have any interest in Genealogy. Charleen has been married to her second husband for over 25 years and they have a son. Her daughter from her first marriage has 3 children. Charleen graduated from a 2-year college, while working. She’s retired, and spending a lot of time working on her big tree on Ancestry.com, member cmbwills.

DNA

Charleen did Ancestry DNA test. The results were: Europe West 42%, Ireland 32%, Italy/Greece 15%, Scandinavia 5%, Great Britain 3%, plus trace regions, for a total of Europe 99%. Current test numbers are the same, but Ireland in now called Ireland/Scotland/Wales which is more accurate, Italy/Greece is called Europe South. Her sister Gin’s results were: Europe West 57%, Ireland/Scotland/Wales 14%, Great Britain 9%, Europe South 8%, plus Low Confidence Regions: Finland, Scandinavia, and others.

Charleen also did Family Tree DNA and mtDNA tests. Her haplogroup is J1c2. The test results were: Western and Central Europe 59%, British Isles 37%, Scandinavia 2%, and Southern Europe 2%, for a total of European 100%. The test results were good, until FamilyTree decided to change their testing. The new results combined all German, French, Irish, and Scaninavian ancestors into British Isles. The new test resuts: British Isles 87%, and Southeast Europe 9%, for total of 96% European. Charleen contacted FamilyTree about the change, but they insist it’s correct.

Germans from Russia

Charleen’s father's ancestors are part of a group known as Germans from Russia. Russia encouraged and helped German farmers move from Alsace (Elsass in German) to Kutschurgan, near Odessa, Russia (now Ukraine), in 1808.[1] They were allowed to set up their own churches and communities. They did well until the new Russian Ruler took over and turned on them. A lot of the family immigrated to USA and Canada, in the late 1800's. Grandfather, Martin Bertsch, immigrated in 1899, with his parents and siblings, and had a farm in North Dakota, USA. Those that didn't leave Russia suffered tremendously during WWI and WWII. Her father, Tony Bertsch, and his older brothers were WWII Veterans. Tony received 2 Purple Hearts and the Bronze Star.

Alsace-Lorraine is a region in Eastern France along the Rhine River that borders Germany and Switzerland. For centuries both France and Germany have fought for control of the area, which has alternated between them. The area is a mixture cultures and languages. In addition to her father’s German ancestors, her mother’s French Huguenot ancestors also came from this area and immigrated to Pennsylvania in 1733, and 1738.

Mayflower Ancestors

Charleen’s mother's ancestors were here for a long time and some were traced back to the Mayflower. A smaller ship, Speedwell, was supposed to travel with the Mayflower to Virginia, but it was too leaky for the voyage. Extra passengers were added to the Mayflower, but others had to return to England and wait a year for the ship Fortune to take them to America. The Mayflower voyage took 66 days due to bad weather that took them off course, landing them at Plymouth 9 November 1620. They weren't prepared for the cold New England weather, and half the passengers died the first winter.

Joanna (Harlow) Snell, Charleen’s 6th gr-grandmother is a documented Mayflower descendant. Joanna's grandfather, William Harlow, descended from Richard Warren who traveled alone on the Mayflower, and sent for his family when conditions improved in the New World. His family arrived July 1623 on the ship Anne. Joanna's grandmother, Lydia (Cushman) Harlow, descended from Isaac Allerton Sr. who brought his wife and children. Isaac's wife Mary had a stillborn son Dec 1620, on the ship while in Plymouth Harbor. Isaac's daughter Mary (Allerton) Cushman, was the last surviving Mayflower Passenger, 28 November 1699.[2]

Arrived on Mayflower, 1620[2]
Richard Warren - 11th gr-grandfather
Isaac Allerton Sr. - 10th gr-grandfather
Mary (Norris) Allerton - 10th gr-grandmother, died first winter
Mary Allerton - 9th gr-grandmother, age 4

Related to about half the Mayflower passengers through marriages, see below.

Plymouth Colony

Nathaniel Morton, Charleen’s 10th gr-grandfather, went to live with his aunt and uncle after his father died in 1624, in Plymouth, a year after they arrived on the ship Little James which arrived in with the ship Anne. Nathaniel's Aunt, Alice Carpenter, married Gov. William Bradford, after she arrived in Plymouth, on the ship Anne, in 1623. Nathaniel married Lydia Cooper and they had 9 children. Nathaniel served most of his life as Secretary of Plymouth, and most of the colony records are in his handwriting. He was first to publish a list of Mayflower Compact signers and an account of the first Thanksgiving.[3] A children's book, Sarah Morton's Day: A Day in the Life of a Pilgrim Girl by Kate Waters, was written about Nathaniel's younger sister Sarah Morton.

Salem Witch Trials

Ann (Alcock) Foster, Charleen’s 9th gr-grandmother, was the mother of 5 children, including her 8th gr-grandmother, Sarah Kemp. Ann's daughter Hannah Stone was killed by her husband Hugh Stone in 1689, while he was in a drunken rage. He was the first murderer in Andover, Massachusetts and was hung. In 1692, Ann, who was a widow, was accused of being a witch, along with her daughter Mary Lacey, and granddaughter Mary Lacey. Two afflicted girls from Salem were brought to Andover to find a witch. They fell into fits when they saw an old woman, Ann Foster. That's all it took to get arrested and tortured. Ann was tried, convicted, and condemned to death. She died at age 75 in the Salem jail on December 3, 1692. Her daughter plead guilty and was pardoned. Ann, through daughter Hannah, was the ancestor of Chester Alan Arthur, who became the 21st President of the United States, in 1881. See Famous Cousins below for list of accused and executed relatives.

Pennsylvania Immigrants

Revolutionary War

Ancestors of Susan (Balliet) Swartz, Charleen’s 4th gr-grandmother, were very involved during the Revolutionary War in Pennsylvania, including all 4 of Susan's gr-grandfathers and her 2nd gr-grandfather John "Jacob" Mickley Jr. who helped hide the Liberty Bell from the British. Jacob was a private in the militia. In September 1777, Jacob and his son took a load of grain and potatoes to Philadelphia to sell, and he was asked to use his horses and wagon to hide the Liberty Bell. They feared the British would melt the bells into cannons. The wagon, with the heavy bell hidden under manure, broke down and Frederick Loeser used his wagon to finish the trip. For almost a year, 11 Bells were hidden under Jacob's church, Zion Reformed Church, in Northampton (now Allentown). Jacob lived nearby and helped build the church. He hauled 6 wagon loads of stone and was hired as a carpenter. The church was used as a military hospital while Philadelphia was occupied. The church, now called Zion Reformed United Church of Christ, is on The National Register of Historic Places, and the Liberty Bell Museum is located inside the church. A children's book, Saving the Liberty Bell by Megan McDonald, was written about 11-year old John Jacob Mickley, his father, and their role in saving the Liberty Bell.

Jacob Mickley's daughter Sarah married Henry Blumer, son of Rev. Abraham Blumer, Pastor of Zion Reformed Church who kept the bells hidden under the church. Jacob's oldest daughter Catharine married John Balliet, Charleen’s 7th gr-grandparents. John, as a young man, first served under his brother as a private, later promoting to Captain. John's brother, Colonel Stephen Balliet, was married to Jacob's cousin Magdalena Burkhalter. Jacob, his brothers, uncle, cousin, brother-in-law, son-in-law, and their relatives fought for their country's freedom.

They eventually settled in Acworth, New Hampshire with their children. Joanna's mother Joanna Harlow was a documented Mayflower descendant. Jacob and Joanna's son John Hayward Sr. married Mary "Polly" Kemp. Polly's 3rd gr-grandmother was Ann Foster, the convicted witch. John and Polly's grandson, Hahnemann, the youngest of 13 children, left the family farm in Acworth with his parents, Nehemiah Hayward and Lucy Brooks Brown, after the 1870 Census, and went to Oberlin, Ohio where his brother Milton lived. Their parents passed away in 1873 and 1874. Hahnemann traveled to Kansas about 1878, with two brothers, a sister, and their families. Searching for Ancestors using WikiTree Relationship Finder

Relationship and common ancestor, using WikiTree Relationship Finder.[3][4][5] Relationship changes when changes are made to WikiTree. (Uncertain) means a WikiTree member is not sure if someone in the relationship line is the correct father, mother, son or daughter.

Using WikiTree Relationship Finder: Relationship Finder is great but has some limitations. It only shows one relationship line to the person you’re searching, the longest line. Unfortunately, the longest line is usually the one you don’t want since it makes the person a more distant relative. It’s correct, but not your closest relationship to the person you’re searching. Several direct ancestors only show up as a cousin. 24th gr-grandmother only showed up as 4th cousin 24xr. She’s a cousin of another direct ancestor. This means you need to search the same person again using the WikiTree ID of different direct ancestors. Used 8th gr-grandparents a lot, along with some 12th and 16th gr-grandparents. Take the time to search 30 generations.

Note: Not all individuals are adequately documented on WikiTree. Some lines will be incorrect! Undocumented lines are included for future research.

European Ancestors

Not all individuals listed here under Dynasty and House of, are listed that way in WikiTree. Family members are listed together to easily find them, and clarify relationship. Have multiple decent lines from Kings because 4th gr-grandfather John Hayward, his wife Polly Kemp, and their daughter-in-law Lucy Brown are distant cousins.

Polly Kemp, her husband John Hayward, and their daughter-in-law Lucy Brown are distant cousins, so they have similar relationships. Polly and John are 11th cousins twice removed. Their closest common ancestors are Roger Wentworth and wife Margery (Despenser) Wentworth. Roger and Margery are Polly’s 10th great grandparents, and John’s 12th great grandparents. Margery is a descendant of Magna Carta surety barons.

Magna Carta Gateway Ancestors are well documented descendants who came to the American colonies.

  • Edward Kemp is a Magna Carta Gateway Ancestor. He was born about 1610 in England and died 17 December 1668, in Chelmsford, Massachusetts. He’s a relative of Mary “Polly” (Kemp) Hayward. Some believe Polly’s 2nd gr-grandfather Samuel Kemp is the son of Edward, but Edward calls Samuel his kinsman in his will. If Samuel is his nephew, relationship levels won’t change. If he’s a cousin, the relationship number may change. Edward and his brothers are known Magna Carta descendants.
  • Oliver Mainwaring (Manwarming) III is a Magna Carta Gateway Ancestor. He is a descendant of Magna Carta surety baron Saher de Quincy through his father Oliver Mainwaring II. Oliver III was born 16 March 1634, in England, and died 3 November 1723, in New London, Connecticut. 8th gr-grandfather through Lucy (Brown) Hayward, wife of Nehemiah Hayward, son of John and Polly.

Hi Charleen

I sent you a check-in message 9 days ago about the 1776 Project to ask you about your past and continued involvement but have not yet heard back from you. Do you still want to be in the project?

If I don’t hear from you by the same time next week I’ll assume that you’ve moved on to other things but you’re most welcome to re-join the project at any time.

Looking forward to hearing from you,

Best wishes,

Mary~ Project Coordinator, Membership, 1776 Project

Greetings from the https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Project:1776

We're doing our semi-annual check-in with members to see if you have been active in the last six months? Please note that it is a requirement for membership in the 1776 Project that you respond to these check-ins.

Please post your reply as a reply to this message on your page, for convenience of the record keeping.

Hello,

I am checking in on behalf of the 1776 Project to announce the new project membership requirements and to verify that you are still interested in being a member of the project. All project members are being asked to join one of the project teams and also to make at least one project contribution every 6 months. We are also asking all project members to join the project's Google Group for project communications.

If you are interested in remaining with the Project, please reply to this comment or send me a message, request to join the Google Group, and let us know what team you would like to participate on.

We really appreciate your contributions on WikiTree, and thank you for all your hard work. If you have any questions, please ask. We would also love to hear any feedback you may have for the project.

I look forward to hearing from you soon!

Hi,

The Germany Project Leaders are doing their semi-annual check-in with all project members and we want to verify that you’re still interested in being a member of the Project. Please respond by private message and let me know.

REMINDERS: (1) We use Google Groups for project collaboration and you aren’t yet a member of the group, please submit a join request here (make sure to add your name/WikiTree ID to the request). (2) I see you've added German_Roots (our old project name) to your G2G tags, you should also add GERMANY to your followed G2G tags so you don't miss any discussions in G2G (see: Help:Tags#How_to_follow_tags Help:Tags).

Are you currently working with one of our Sub-projects or Teams? If not, take a look at our main Project page for a full list. We recently launched a new Profile Improvement Team and are seeking new team members. Let me know if you’re interested.

We really appreciate your contributions on WikiTree, and thank you for all your hard work. If you have any questions, please ask. We would also love to hear any feedback you may have for the project.

I look forward to hearing from you soon!

Feel free to remove me from any project. My husband was in a bad accident and that is my priority.

Hello, Charlene,

It has been a few weeks since we contacted you about your participation in the Black Sheep Project and as we haven't heard from you, we are following up to make sure you wish to remain a member.

We understand that interests shift as we grow our shared tree and that some members may have moved on to projects more pertinent to the branches they are currently building. If this is the case for you, please let us know.

If we do not hear back from you within the week, we will assume you have moved on to other things for the moment and remove you from the project. Please know that you will always be welcome to rejoin should your interests shift back in this direction.

Thank you so much for your participation; we genuinely appreciate it.

All of us at WikiTree would like to thank you for your contributions and hope that you are enjoying exploring your roots.

I look forward to hearing from you soon.

Hi Charleen,

The Ireland Project (previously the Irish Roots Project) has now changed its structure into Teams. We require everyone with the Ireland Badge to be a member of at least one Team or Sub-Team and our google group. See https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Project:Ireland for details. The Teams are :-

1. Categories Team
2. Counties Team
3. Managed Profiles Team
4. Membership Team
5. Profile Improvement Team
6. Topics Team
7. Diaspora

? Can you let me know if you’d like to stay on in the new project and which team(s) you’d like to join. Please also let me know your e-mail address so that I can get you added to the project’s Google Group or confirm you are already a member of the google group.

Many thanks,

Maria

Regarding the family of Nathaniel Harlow. My interest is in the Lucas family and the ancestors of Patience Lucas. There seems to be some question regarding the parentage of Patience (Warren) Lucas. https://www.wikitree.com/genealogy/Harlow-Family-Tree-1540

HI,

just a word (late) to congratulate you on the contributions you made during the month of November. Whatever the quantity, they are all important.

Your work is appreciated.

Thanks

Welcome to the 1776 Project (http://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Project:1776), a subproject of the Military and War Project: http://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Projects#Military_and_War_Project

There are category links to add to your ancestor's profiles and research links to learn more about your family. The Project is a good way to consolidate the WikiTree ancestors with historic connections to the years of 1773 (Boston Tea Party) to 1789 (ratification of the U.S. Constitution.) All patriot, loyalist, Hessians, French, Native Americans or any other profiles with a connection to these years should be linked to an appropriate category in the Project.

If you haven’t already, please set your preferences for your Tags Followed to include 1776 Project and any other tag terms that you wish to follow: http://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Special:Following

Some categories have a template (SAR) to add at the top of a biography. If not, add a category link by putting the category name such as Template:1776 for those who bore arms in the Revolution. Thank you.

Yes, Harlow-626 & 619 are cousins as I got the message yesterday and merged the duplicates Harlow-626 & 707 which is correct, yes?

Thank you - this puts the 3 way match question to rest.

Best, Sheryl

Hi Char and thanks for your message on G2G. Sorry for delay in replying.

I’ve added the Irish Roots Project badge to your profile. If you click on the badge it will take you to the full list of our wonderful members. Click on Irish Roots Project will take you to the first page of the project. I've added your good self to the member interest page. Here you can let others know which counties or names you are researching etc.

Thanks for joining the project and good luck with your research. Maria
