Biography

James Chilton was the oldest passenger on the Mayflower.

He was probably born about 1555,[1] in Kent, England, to Lyonell Chilton (1530-1582)[2] and probably Edith.[3]

The surname Chilton appears in Kent as early as 1339. For James's ancestry see The Mayflower Quarterly, August, 1977, pp. 81ff.

He became a tailor, and was made a freeman of Canterbury in 1583.[4]

Around 1600, he moved to Sandwich, Kent. By 1615 he was in Leyden, with some of his children. On April 28, 1619, James and his daughter Isabel were caught in an anti-Arminian riot and James was hit in the head with a large stone and required the services of the town surgeon, Jacob Hey.

The name of James's wife has not been found. The baptisms of his children are recorded in the registers of St. Paul's, and later St Martin's, in Canterbury, and then at Sandwich, but their mother is never named.

The suggestion by John G. Hunt in The American Genealogist 38:244-245 that his wife was possibly Susanna Furner has been recently disproven on the basis of the discovery of Susanna Furner's baptism record, which indicates she was far too young (only 12) to be married and having children in 1586.

On September 6, 1620, the Mayflower left Plymouth, England. On board were James, his wife, and their daughter Mary, 13. James Chilton signed the Mayflower Compact 11 Nov 1620.[5] Both James and his wife died on the ship before the winter was out.[6] Mary is traditionally said to have been the first female to step ashore at Plymouth, and is assumed to have joined the Myles Standish household. She later married John Winslow, who arrived on the "Fortune".

His descendants for five generations are given in Mayflower Families through Five Generations (Plymouth, MA: General Society of Mayflower Descendants, Vol. II)

A memorial erected in Provincetown, Massachusetts in 1920 mentions Chilton and others who died aboard the Mayflower after it arrived in Provincetown harbour.[7]

He is believed to be identical with James Chylton, citizen and tailor of Canterbury in 1583. The following entries from the church register of St. Paul, Canterbury, record the baptisms of his children, viz.: Isabella, 15 January, 1586; in 1615 she married Roger Chandler in Leyden, later of Duxbury (1632); Jane, 8 June, 1589; "Ingle" 1599. He removed to the parish of St. Martin, same city, and had the following children baptized: Elizabeth, 14 July, 1594; and James, 22 August, 1596. Two other children - Mary and Joel - died in 1593 there. The following entries from St. Peter's, Sandwich, undoubtedly refer to the same James (the parish where several of the Pilgrims lived prior to removal to Leyden) viz: Christian, 26 July, 1600; James, 11 September, 1602; Mary (famous for her historic leap making her the first to land on Plymouth Rock) was probably born about 1608 in another parish. ... James Chilton died shortly after the "Landing." "The name Chilton occurs in the Leyden records but the items relate to Isaac Chilton, a looking-glass maker, said to be from France. He may have been a son of James. Angela Chilton married Robert Nelson in 1622 at Leyden, probably the "Ingle" above named.
  • Pioneers of Massachusetts, Pope, from DAR:
James came in the Mayflower; signed the Compact. Res. at Plymouth. Brought with him his wife Mary (?) who d. within a few months after arrival. He brought dau. Mary, who m. John Winslow. Another dau. came over afterward, that was married. He d. Dec 6, 1620.

I want to make sure that the Mayflower Project and James Chilton descendants are aware that Sue Allan has announced that her book In Search of James Chilton of Canterbury has gone to the publisher with the NEHGS. Sue is one of the, if not THE, current number one researcher on Mayflower passenger origins. She has previously published on the origins of William White, Susanna Jackson, Dorothy May, Isaac Allerton, John Carver, and Degory Priest. Generally, these are in conjunction with Caleb Johnson and Simon Neal. Her book will undoubtedly greatly expand on what is known about the ancestry and life of James Chilton.

Thank you, Joe, I look forward to seeing her new research. It's certainly exciting. Let us know if you see it come out.

I’m wondering if Susanna Furner could have been the second wife of James Chilton. Many women (and children) died during or shortly following childhood. If James’ first wife died around the time his son James (Second son named James) in 1603, a marriage to a younger woman (Susanna?) would be possible. James’ youngest daughter, Mary (married Winslow) born in 1607 could have been from a second marriage during those 4 years in Sandwich.

I suppose that your scenario might fit the circumstances. However, there is no evidence that he had a second wife, and four years is not a large gap between children especially considering that Chilton's wife was nearing the end of her child bearing years.

Whoever removed Susanna Furner as James Chilton's wife should consider the following:
  • It is unusual but possible for a girl to reach puberty at age 9. The medical condition known as precocious puberty, starts at less that 8. The only negative results involve self-image, not physical abilities.
  • The statistical range for puberty in 13 +/_ 4 years, which means 1.5 % of girls become women when less than 9 years old.
  • Although it usually takes a girl about 3 years to reach reproductive maturity after the onset of puberty, individual variation can reduce that time significantly.
  • There was a documented birth to a mother of 6 years +/- 5 months.
  • Historically, it is not at all unusual for a woman of 12 to be married and having children, especially in pre-Renaissance ages. In some cultures, this is still considered normal. In the Roman Empire, the legal age of marriage was 12.

We need documentary evidence of his marriage. There may be very rare instances of a 12 year old bride, and mother, in England in this time period, but without solid proof to back it up, the marriage to Susanna is conjecture only.

So Chilton 5 & 11 ? Sisters or Duplicate profile? 18 years apart but who names a kid after a dead kid? Sorry, Confused.
posted by Jeff Michaelsen
In reply to only the portion where you ask, "who names a kid after a dead kid?" That was extremely common. The first child of the name was often to commemorate a relative. Infant/child mortality was very high. A later child was named, presumably, after the original relative, not the dead child. If you need examples, I'm sure the community can find quite a few for you.

In addition to Bobbie's comments. Definitely two separate Mary's.

Okidoki,

Learned something new. I have to keep that one in mind going forward. Thank you ladies, Jeff

Shouldn't place of death be The Mayflower, Cape Cod Harbor, Plymouth Colony?

Wasn't The Mayflower in Cape Cod Harbor not off of it? It was off of Cape Cod.

Also, location fields should only give the approprate name of the location at the time of the event, not also the current place name, so "later Provincetown Harbor, Barnstable County, Massachusetts" is not appropriate.

What is the authority for his mother's name, Edith? RCA in TGM, TAG 38(1962):244 (John G. Hunt), and The Mayflower and Her Passengers (Caleb H. Johnson) all say mother is unknown.

A 2013 article that is cited in the biography (reference #3). I have just expanded her biography

James is attached to the wrong mother. The correct mother is Edith (Unknown-466930) Chilton. Isabell was his father's second wife.
