  • Izard County, Arkansas is named in his honor.

According to Encyclopedia of Arkansas George Izard was born on October 21, 1776, to Ralph Izard and Alice DeLancey Izard near London, England. His father, a native of South Carolina, transacted personal and diplomatic business in Europe and later served as a delegate to the Continental Congress and as U.S. senator from South Carolina. Izard’s mother was of a prominent colonial New York family. Izard had eight sisters and four brothers.

In 1780, Mrs. Izard with the children and a tutor, left Paris and returned to South Carolina.

On June 6, 1803, Izard married twice-widowed Elizabeth Carter Farley Banister Shippen of Philadelphia; they had met some years before in South Carolina. They had three sons.

President John Quincy Adams reappointed Izard in 1828 to serve another three-year term. He served until his death on November 22, 1828, after a month-long illness resulting from an attack of gout. Izard was buried near the Peabody School in Little Rock, about where the current Federal Building stands. After Mount Holly Cemetery was established in 1843, Izard’s remains were moved to Senator Chester Ashley’s plot at Ashley’s direction.

From the Greater Adirondack Ghost Company Facebook Page: "A Countdown to Invasion!" - August 30th, 1814: 207 years ago today - With thousands of British troops now massing along the Canadian border, all signs point to an imminent invasion of the Champlain Valley. Astonishingly, at this critical moment, Major General George Izard, the 38-year-old U.S. Army commander at Plattsburgh (seen gazing out from this 19th Century portrait), had been ordered by the War Department to take 4,000 of his best troops and march for Sacket's Harbor, New York, 170 miles away. Unbeknownst to military officials in Washington, the British had secretly launched a diversionary raid there to draw American forces away from their real objectives, and it had worked. General Izard, who had been a student at military academies in England and Germany before the War, saw this as an obvious ruse, but those in Washington had not. He grudgingly obeyed his orders, but only under protest, prophetically lamenting that "...everything in this vicinity...will, in less than three days after my departure, be in the possession of the enemy." His words would prove to be more true than he could imagine.
