Fonda's first marriage was to Margaret Sullavan.^[1] They were married on Christmas Day 1931 and divorced on 14 Mar 1933.

Fonda's second marriage was to Frances Ford Seymour. They were married on 18 Sep 1936 and from this union, two children were born. She passed away on 14 Apr 1950.

Fonda's third marriage lasted until 2 May 1956. They had one child together and then divorced.

Fonda's fourth marriage also ended in divorce.

His fifth and final marriage ended when he passed away in 1982.
