Julia Gardiner (b. [04 May or 23 Jul] 1820 Gardiner’s Island, Long Island, NY - d. 1889 Richmond, Virginia),[1][2] was the daughter of:
Julia is said to be a direct paternal descendant of Lion Gardiner (c. 1599 - 1683), an English immigrant who purchased Gardiner's Island, and became the first English settler of New York state.[2] According to Besche (2017), Lion was an adventurer and a military engineer for the Connecticut Company.[2]
As the second wife of [Tyler-150|Pres. John Tyler]] (d. 1862), Julia was First Lady of the United States from 1844 to 1845.[1]
Julia married John were secretly engaged and married while he was in office. The ceremony took place on 26 June 1844 in New York,[1] at the Church of Ascension in New York City.[4]
Julia and John had seven children. Five of them were born at their Sherwood Forest plantation in Virginia.[1][5]

Julia resided at Sherwood Forest until the Civil War,[7] then moved back to New York where she worked as a volunteer for the Confederacy.[1] Sometime after she moved to Richmond, Virginia where she lived out her last days.[1]
Julia died in Richmond, Virginia. She was buried there, next to her husband.[1]
