He served as the 26th Vice President of the United States between 1905 and 1909 during the second term of President Theodore Roosevelt. Previously, he served as the Republican Senator from Indiana.
His father, Loriston Fairbanks, was a farmer and wagon maker who had moved from New York to go into business for himself. He became active in Union County as a member of the agricultural board, and his wife, Mary Adelaide Smith, was a local temperance advocate.[1]
Charles W. Fairbanks grew up in Ohio and attended Ohio Wesleyan University between 1867 and 1872. As a senior in college, he served as the Editor of the college newspaper.
He worked briefly for the Associated Press between 1872 abd 1874 in Pittsburgh and Cleveland, while preparing for admission as an attorney to the bar in Columbus, Ohio.
In June of 1874, he moved to Indianapolis, where he established a law practice. In October, 1874, he married a judge's daughter, Cornelia Cole of Marysville, Ohio. During their marriage, they raised at least five children.
In Alaska, the city and county of Fairbanks were named in honor of Sen. Fairbanks.
