Biography

Henry Rice immigrated to New England as a child during the Puritan Great Migration (1621-1640).

Henry Rice was christened 13 Feb 1620/21,[1] in Stanstead, Suffolk, England, son of Edmund Rice and Thomasine Frost.[2] [3] [4] [5][6][7][8][9][10]

He was one of the early grantees or settlers, who went to the Sudbury Plantation about 1638 or 1639.[11] Henry was assigned a house-lot on the south street of the settlement, adjacent to his father, Edmund, on the west.[11][12]

He married Elizabeth Moore 1 January 1643/44 in Sudbury, Massachusetts.Elizabeth Moore, daughter of John Moore Sr and (per Edmund Rice Association) Bridget Unknown, on 1 January 1643/44 at Sudbury, MA; (February per Ward).[2][5][3][13][10][6][14].

He swore an oath of fidelity at Sudbury, on 9 July 1645.[2][14][10] and was designated a Freeman on 10 May 1648 at Massachusetts. Henry received one lot in the Sudbury Two-Mile Grant in 1655 and was one of the thirteen Sudbury petitioners for the grant of Marlborough in 1656. His father (Edmund Rice) deeded him a tract of land in the wilderness then called "New Trouble" in 1659. He received 50 acres in 1659 at Rice's End from his father, where he built a house.

1648: Made freeman 10 May.[14][15][10]

1655: Received one lot in the Sudbury Two-Mile grant.[16][10]

1656: one of the thirteen Sudbury petitioners for the grant of Marlboro; was an early proprietor (with father Edmund and brother Edward) of Marlboro.[4][10]

1659: His father (Edmund Rice) deeded him a tract of land in the wilderness then called "New Trouble".[17][10]

1659: He received 50 acres at Rice's End from his father, where he built a house in 1659.

25 January 1667 deposition in court: he called himself about 50 years old.[2]

In 1679, he was selected tythingman 30 January at Selectmen's Meeting; sworn in 1st March following. In 1684 he was one of the signers of the land deed purchasing Marlborough lands from the Indians for 30 pounds.

1684: was one of the signers of the land deed purchasing Marlborough lands from the Indians for 30 pounds, probably settling there by 1691.[6] (see Page 9)

Henry was one of the first members of the church of Framingham in 1701.[17][10]

His wife died 3 August 1705, and he made his will shortly thereafter.

Henry Rice died 10 February 1710/11 in Framingham, Middlesex (or Worcester?), Massachusetts and is supposedly buried in Sudbury, Middlesex, Massachusetts.[10][2][5]

I received the following from a non-logged in user; I don't know the answer. Does anyone else know?

"RE: "His father (Edmund Rice) deeded him a tract of land in the wilderness then called "New Trouble" in 1659. He received 50 acres in 1659 at Rice's End from his father, where he built a house. "

Do you know 1) if the land he received in "New Trouble" and the land he received in "Rice's End" were the same? It was the same year. 2) Do you know where either is? In 1636, many walked from Boston to Hartford in what was called "The March Through the Wilderness."

At least according to this source, it was part of Rice's End which was in Framingham: "In 1659 he received from his father a deed to 4 or 5 acres of meadow lying in the wilderness at a place called "New Trouble" at what was termed Rice’s End, in what is now Framingham."
