I was born and raised in a former coal mining camp (Lynch) in Harlan County, Kentucky. My mother's side of the family have long roots in E. KY, SW Virginia, and E. TN. I also have a 5th great grandmother who was a Melungeon. I am also descended from immigrants who came from Europe/Eastern Europe to SE Kentucky to work in the coal mines. Both of my grandfathers helped unionize Harlan County during the turbulent times of the 1930's, when it became known as "Bloody Harlan".
