I am an 8th Generation Appalachian American.
I am as wonderful and diverse as my Appalachian Heritage. As you explore my branches of the tree you will see that my roots are grounded very deep in the Appalachian soil of Kentucky and that those who did brave to venture out of Appalachia it was not for long and most returned home even it if was just to be laid to rest in a family cemetery close to where they breathed their first breath.
In each family, there is one who seems called to find the ancestors. To put flesh on their bones and make them live again. To tell the family story and to feel that somehow they know and approve. Doing Genealogy is not a cold gathering of facts, but instead, breathing life into all who have gone before. We are the storytellers of the tribe. |

That said please do take some care when adding stickers and categories to profiles at the periphery. I noticed you added a sticker to the profile for my 3rd g-grandfather George Washington Teeter who lived all his life in Lansing, New York. It’s a real stretch to call Lansing Appalachia. Tompkins county is an Appalachian border county. Much of the towns of Newfield, Danby, Caroline and even Dryden are in the Appalachian foothills, but Lansing is solidly in the Finger Lakes, a flatter glacial terrain that is geographically, geologically and culturally distinct. A town like Ithaca (encircling the city) is truly at the border, encompassing the edge of the Appalachian foothills and the southern extent of Cayuga Lake, where these regions blend together.
We use the guidelines set up by the Appalachian Regional Commission. It seems in almost every state there is debate by someone about their area not being Appalachian. If you feel that the ARC is incorrect please feel free to remove his sticker and any categories. We respect everyone’s opinion and how they choose to represent their ancestors. Have a blessed day Dear.
Pam
I don't think that the Appalachian Regional Commission has "guidelines" anywhere that state that the entirety of every county in their service area is "Appalachian." If there are such guidelines please point me to them.
I'm not arguing that there aren't parts of every ARC county that are Appalachian. I'm saying that there are parts of ARC border counties that are pretty clearly not Appalachian and this label should not be applied to all of border counties indiscriminately. Some counties are large, some are small, some encompass multiple geographic regions.
I don't have a problem with you adding this sticker to counties that are clearly within Appalachia, but adding the sticker and categories, with nothing else, to profiles in border counties that have no clear connection, geographical or otherwise, does not improve these profiles. By many measures Atlanta is more "Appalachia" than Lansing, but it is not an "ARC County," and I think we would probably agree that adding the sticker to every Atlanta profile would not be an improvement.
Thank you for your participation on Team Virginia in the January 2023 Connect-A-Thon. You helped bring Team Virginia to a Historical Finish with over 10k profiles added and an amazing 1st place finish. We could not have done it without you! This category, https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Category:Mount_Sinai_Methodist_Cemetery%2C_Piedmont%2C_South_Carolina has 15 links to it that need to be deleted before the category can be deleted, see the "What Links Here" link.
Many thanks, regards, Margaret, Categorization Project.
Im confused. When I go through the link there isn't anything in the category that I can see. I moved the profiles before asking for the deletion.
Yes, Natalie has corrected the links and the category has been deleted. You removed the category from the profiles but not the links to the category in the text of the profiles and space pages.
Have a look at this profile change, https://www.wikitree.com/index.php?title=Elrod-1632&diff=163499757&oldid=163380550, as well as the change on this space page https://www.wikitree.com/index.php?title=Pam%27s_Cemetery_List&diff=prev&oldid=163499658 and this one, https://www.wikitree.com/index.php?title=Space:Mount_Siniai_A.M.E._Church%2C_Piedmont%2C_South_Carolina&diff=163499683&oldid=163205814
When you want to change a category that has profiles and links on profiles/pages to the category, it is better to use the Rename Category rather than Delete Category, as Editbot will change the category on links but does not delete links to a category in the text of a profile or page, as that could mean there could be gaps in the text. Alternatively, if there are no profiles, any links should be corrected before sending for deletion.
You can check if a category has any profiles or pages with links to it, by checking the "What links here" link at the bottom right hand side of any category page.
Regards, Margaret
I started my new profile on Wikitree after looking for a similarity to Wikipedia, because I am a contributor to the Dutch Wikipedia. But I saw no affiliation of Wikitree to Wikipedia. So my general login for all of the Wikimedia projects is not effective here. Greetings, Robin

The Profile Improvement Project (PIP) is performing its first annual check-in with our project members. Please review the following and let us know if you are content where we have placed you or would like to be more involved.
We are in the process of transitioning to a team structure. There will be three participant PIP Teams to start -- The Maintenance Category Team, the Unknowns Team, and the Biography Team. There is also the Voyage Team who guide new Voyagers. See the Profile Improvement Project Teams for a brief outline of each team. You're currently identified as a member of the Biography Team Level 1, working on profiles from your own watchlist and whatever else you find. Biography Teams Levels 2 and 3 will work on designated profiles for notables (Level 3) and everyday people (Level 2). Please let us know if you would like to help with another Team.
We would also like to invite you to join the email GoogleGroup and text chat Discord channel for our project. (When you request to join our GoogleGroup, please be sure to include your Wiki ID). I think I could go a little higher on the lists. Here’s a few examples of my recent work.
Notable Profiles …
https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Stokes-1790
https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Dick-4379
a War Related Profile…
https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Dale-2873
I joined the OnePlaceStudy for my family cemetery and working in a second one.
https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Space:Wilson_Cemetery
I have made literally 100’s of Cemetery Categories and Spacepages.
I will join the google group but I have already joined on discord I believe.
We'd love to have you on Bio Team Level 2 with us. There are instructions on how to find the profiles we would like to have help with on that page. Please let us know if you have any questions about how to work those profiles.
Please note that the headings between Biography and Sources should have three equal signs on each side rather than two. See Additional Sections portion of the Biographies Help page for more information on that.
Profiles being worked on by Bio Team Level 3 will require extraordinary attention to details such as grammar and punctuation. Many of us use the Grammarly extension to attain that high standard. Each of the samples you provided had more than the Level 3 error limit. If you would like to bump up to Level 3, give the extension a try on a couple of those profiles and re-submit them.
Please let us know if you have any suggestions for how to improve the project.
