Appalachia Challenge Team
- The next thon is the Connect-A-Thon, April 19th through 22nd, 2024' Link to Register Coming Soon.
- HANGOUT SCHEDULE
- Scorecard aka Tracker aka Stats
- IMPORTANT! IF at the start of the Thon, on Friday, you can not access our DIscord Channel, Appalachia Roots Thon Team Channel (which is separate from the Appalachia Project Channel), please leave a message on WikiTree's General Discord and ask to be added. You must mention our Thon Team name.
"Appalachia Roots" was established in 2023 as a challenge team that works to improve and connect profiles associated within Appalachia regions in the U.S. and the locations they emigrated from.
- Although our primary focus/research will be on the Appalachia Regions and all areas that people have emigrated from, you are always welcome to create and improve profiles in any area, worldwide. Membership in the Appalachia Project is not required to be on the Appalachia Thon Team.
- NOTE: We will not be solely focusing on numbers. Our main focus will be to have F-U-N with allowable quality sources. Collaborating together is more important to us than winning.
The Captain for the 2024 Appalachia Team is: Sandy Patak.
This team works these marathons: source-a-thon connect-a-thon
States where we work in: alabama georgia kentucky maryland mississippi new_york north_carolina ohio pennsylvania south_carolina tennessee virginia west_virginia and appalachia

Don't worry if you add a profile that is not in a defined "Appalachia" area. All profiles you add or source during a Thon counts towards your total and the Team's totals.
Connect-A-Thon
- The Connect-a-Thon is one of our biggest events. Its mission: bring the world closer together by connecting more people on our big tree. For 72 hours we add missing relatives. It's like adding missing pieces to a puzzle. The more pieces of the puzzle we add, the more they connect.
- Scores are tracked automatically. You do not need to use the "challenge tracker" or manually keep track of how many profiles you add.
- Our system counts the number of non-living family members you add. Often these will be "collateral" relatives that members neglected to add when adding their family tree.
- All profiles must have at least one valid source.
- Fine print:
- Creating any new profile counts as one point, with just two exceptions:
- If you create a profile with no relationship to any other profile, it does not count.
- If you create a profile for a living person, it does not count.
- For example:
- Create person A with Add an Unrelated Person: 0 points.
- Create person B as the spouse of person A: 1 point.
- Create person C as the child of person A: 1 point.
- Create person D as the parent of person B: 1 point.
- For scoring purposes it doesn't matter if any profiles are connected or not. Every missing family member we add increases the chances of connecting people.

Source-A-Thon
- Select an Open-privacy unsourced profile from one of the Unsourced Lists above and then research to find valid sources that back up the genealogical facts of the person's life. You can add one or several sources, but they must be cited according to WikiTree Source and Style guidelines so that other WikiTreers can easily find/verify the information you added. You will get one point for each profile sourced (not one point per source added), but adding multiple sources, if you find them, is appreciated!
- NOTE: Valid sources include parish records, family books, census records, BMD records/index, military documents, land documents, wills, etc. REMEMBER: user-generated family trees, such as Geni or FamilySearch/Ancestry Member Trees are NOT considered to be legitimate sources. However, valid sources found on FamilySearch and Ancestry, cited properly, are GREAT (please cite these correctly and add a link, even if it's a pay-to-view site like Ancestry, etc.).
- Chris previously said, that unsourced profiles, meaning profiles without any primary source, fit our definition of unsourced and should be counted as well, even if they're NOT in the unsourced category.
- After you find a valid source:
- EDIT the profile to ADD the source, according to our Sources guide.
- REMOVE the {{Unsourced}} template (usually at the top of the profile) and any unsourced categories.
- SAVE the profile and then click the Challenge Tracker button at the top of the saved profile.
- Verify that your WikiTree ID is on the Challengers Tracker page, and CLICK "ADD ACTION"
- YOU NEED TO CLICK THE GREEN CHALLENGE TRACKER, and CLICK "ADD ACTION" for your entry to count!!
- If you can not find a source, please add a ==Research Notes== section and include the ways you researched but could not find accurate information.
- Check out this page if more help is needed: Help:Source-a-Thon

Glossary
These are common acronyms, initialisms, and terminology that we use on the Discord chat:
- DD - Data Doctors (WikiTree Project)
- FG - Find A Grave (website)
- FS - FamilySearch (website)
- FSP - Free Space Page. It can be a page about anything on WikiTree, but not for a specific person.
- FTDNA - FamilyTreeDNA website for consumer DNA testing. Can refer to either the website itself, or their DNA tests, or both.
- H&M - Hatfield & McCoy. Infamous family feud in Kentucky / West Virginia in the late 1800s. Subproject of Appalachia. It is NOT the Hennes & Mauritz clothing store from Sweden.
- NMC - Non-Marital Children. A child born to parents who are not married, and might therefore have the mother's maiden surname. This used to be called a child "born out of wedlock", but that carried a certain social stigma to it. In modern times, it carries less of a social stigma.
- NPE - Non-paternity Event. Used in genetics testing to indicate where a person's father listed on their birth certificate (birth certificate father or BCF) is not their biological father. Some people prefer to say that NPE stands for Non Parental Event, or even Not Parent Expected, which could mean either the father, or the mother, is different from biological (therefore, unexpected). But there are different mechanisms and implications when the father is unexpected, versus when the mother is unexpected, that don't always imply that they should be grouped together under the same label.
- ONS - One Name Study (WikiTree Project)
- OPS - One Place Study (WikiTree Project)
- WD - Wikidata
- WP - Wikipedia
- WT - WikiTree
- WT+ - WikiTree+ or WikiTree Plus. External system that provides lots of useful reports on WT. Used extensively by the DD project.
