Leoluca Cascio is born and baptized on 7 November 1808, named after his paternal grandfather, as is traditional for the first son. He is the second child of Giuseppe Cascio and Maria Oliveri. His godparents are Mariano and Anna Gulotta, a married couple.
Leoluca marries twice and has at least five children with his first wife, and nine children with his second wife.
His father has died by 1834, when his older sister, Emmanuela, marries.
Leoluca's first marriage is to Giovanna Giuffrida, a widow, on 20 May 1838. Leoluca's father, Giuseppe, has died by this time, and his mother, Maria, is still living. The following day another Leoluca Cascio, a widower of unknown relation, marries the widow Gaetana Saccaro.
Leoluca and Giovanna have at least five children: Giuseppe (1839), Leonardo (1840), Biagio (1842), Maria Rosa (1844), and Salvatore (1846).
Giuseppe is born and baptized on 24 February 1839. His godparents are Giuseppe and Giovanna Ligotino, a married couple.
Leonardo, named after his maternal grandfather, is born and baptized on 28 August 1840. His godparents are Gaetano and Marianna Vinci, a married couple.
Biagio (Blasio in church records) Cascio (sometimes Castro or lo Cascio) is a contadino (peasant) or agricola (farmer) born 16 April 1842 in his parents' home in Corleone. He is the son of Leoluca Cascio, age 32 (b. 1810), agricola, and Giovanna Giuffrida, age 30 (b. 1812). His birth is reported by his father. Within the same document (on the side recording his baptism), Biagio is also called Biagio lo Cascio. He is baptized the same day. His godparents are Vincenzo Ligotino and his paternal aunt Carmela Cascio, a married couple.
Maria Rosa is born and baptized on 18 January 1844. Her godparents are Rosario Marullo and Maria Rosa Salemi, a married couple.
Salvatore's birth is reported by the midwife, Francesca Paola de Luca, age 41. He is born to Giovanna Giuffrida, age 38 (b. 1808), in via S. Rocco, Corleone, and Leoluca Cascio, her husband, age 38 (b. 1808), an agricola, on 9 June 1846.
Giuseppe dies at age ten (b. 1839) on 24 October 1849.
Giovanna dies at age 40 (b. 1810) on 24 February 1850. Her husband and parents survive her.
Leoluca marries Salvatrice Ligotino[1] two months later, on April 29, 1850. They have at least nine children together: Giovanni (1851), Giuseppe (1852), two sons named Carmelo (1854 and 1861), Francesca (1856), Francesco (1858), Vincenza (1864), Michelangelo (1867), and Liboria (1869).
Open issue: I am not entirely certain the individuals linked to above are Giovanni's godparents. I think they are because the Leoluca linked to above marries Lucia Quaglino, Margherita's sister, in 1856. Another Quaglino sister is Biagia, wife of Giovanni Grizzaffi. Biagia and Giovanni stand as his sister Liboria's godparents in 1869.
Open issue: I did not save the correct link supporting Giuseppe's birth information; below is to the Atti di Matrimonio, not the publicazione that would include his birth notice extract. When I dig it up again I'll check these ages again. It seems that Leoluca gains three years between the births of Giuseppe and Francesco.
See the Cascio Family Space for a short discussion on naming conventions.
The first son named Carmelo dies on 21 November 1860 at four years of age.
Maria Rosa, from Leoluca's first marriage, marries Gaetano di Palermo on 7 February 1864.
Michaelangelo dies in infancy, on 5 July 1868.
Salvatore, Leoluca's son from his first marriage, marries Anna Maria Grizzaffi on October 14, 1868.
Liboria dies at three years of age, on 10 October 1871.
Leoluca dies at age 63 on 17 April 1872 (according to the Church; the civil record says the 19th). At the time of his death, he resides in via Santo Bono. His wife, Salvatrice, and his mother, Maria, survive him.
Maria dies at age 90 (b. 1785), on 7 April 1875. She has not remarried, despite being widowed for more than forty years.
Leonardo, also from Leoluca's first marriage, marries a woman with the same name as his father's second wife: Salvatrice Ligotino, daughter of Vincenzo and Carmela Cascio. Leonardo and Salvatrice marry on 27 September 1875. It is the first marriage for either of them.
Leoluca and Salvatrice's oldest son, Giovanni, marries Rosa Gennaro, daughter of Luciano Gennaro and Lucia Cascio, on 19 November 1877.
Carmelo dies at age 17 (b. 1861) on 23 August 1878. He is unmarried.
The surviving Giuseppe marries Angela Grizzaffi, Anna Maria's sister, on 3 November 1880.
Francesco marries twice, first to Maria Antonia Gennaro, Rosa's sister, on 31 October 1881. This marriage includes a dispensation due to consanguinity (they are second cousins).
Giuseppe dies at age 46 (b. 28 Jul 1852) on 6 January 1899 at 4:30 pm. This record does not mention that he leaves a widow, Angela.
Francesco remarries, to Giovanna Spatafora, a widow, on 2 March 1908. A second degree consanguinity is discovered in a collateral line (they are first cousins), and dispensation received 27 February 1908.[2]
