Biography

Salvatrice Ligotino is born in the 22nd hour and baptized on 24 November 1826. She is the first born child of Carmelo Ligotino and Maria Rosa Mannina, born ten months after their marriage. She may be named in honor of her paternal grandfather. Her godparents are Calogero and Biagia Mannina, brother and sister.

In 1839, Salvatrice, 13, is the oldest child living with her parents Carmelo, reportedly age 37 (he is 39 this year), and Maria Rosa, 31, on the strada di Trapani. Also at home are Anna Maria, 11, Salvadore, 9, Vincenzo, 7 (he is six), and Lucia, 2 (b. 1839).

Salvatrice is the second wife of Leoluca Cascio. They marry on 29 April 1850. Carmelo has died by this time, and Maria Rosa is still living.

Salvatrice and Leoluca have at least nine children together: Giovanni (1851), Giuseppe (1852), two sons named Carmelo (1854 and 1861), Francesca (1856), Francesco (1858), Vincenza (1864), Michelangelo (1867), and Liboria (1869).

Giovanni is born and baptized on 20 March 1851. His godparents are Leoluca Cascio and Margarita Quaglino, who are not married.

Open issue: I am not entirely certain the individuals linked to above are Giovanni's godparents. I think they are because the Leoluca linked to above marries Lucia Quaglino, Margherita's sister, in 1856. Another Quaglino sister is Biagia, wife of Giovanni Grizzaffi. Biagia and Giovanni stand as his sister Liboria's godparents in 1869.

Giuseppe is born July 28, 1852 on via San Elena in Corleone to Leoluca Cascio, age 41, agricola/farmer and Salvatrice Ligotino, age 26.

The first son named Carmelo, after Salvatrice's father, is born and baptized 6 July 1854. His godparents are Joannus di Miceli and Salvatrix Carrabba, wife of Calogeri di Miceli.

Francesca is born and baptized Francescam on 27 August 1856. Her godparents are Julius la Corte and Liboria Orlando.

Francesco is born 22 October 1858 and baptized 23 October. His godparents are Joannes Castelli and Rosalia Gagliardo. Francesco survives to marry.

The first son named Carmelo dies on 21 November 1860 at four years of age.

The second son named Carmelo is born and baptized Carmelum on 25 July 1861. His godparents are Cyrus Merendino and Providentia Ducibella, a married couple.

Vincenza is born and baptized on 11 January 1864. Her godparents are Magister (Master) Bernardus Colletti and Liboria Moscato.

Michelangelo is born 18 April 1867 and baptized on 20 April. His godparents are Salvator Ligotino and Magdalena Gaglianello.

Michaelangelo dies in infancy, on 5 July 1868.

Salvatore, Leoluca's son from his first marriage, marries Anna Maria Grizzaffi on October 14, 1868.

Liboria is born 9 February 1869, and baptized Liboriam the next day. Her godparents are Giovanni Grizzaffi and Biagia Quaglino.

Liboria dies at three years of age on 10 October 1871.

Leoluca dies on 19 April 1872 at age 64, according to the civil record, or on the 17th at age 70, according to the Church.

Giovanni marries Rosa Gennaro, daughter of Luciano Gennaro and Lucia Cascio, on 19 November 1877. Giovanni and Rosa are second cousins.

Carmelo dies at age 17 (b. 1861) on 23 August 1878. He is unmarried.

Open issue: The Church record of his death refers to both of his parents as having died.

Salvatrice's date of death is unknown; she survives Leoluca, but by the time the second son named Carmelo dies, she has passed away. However, Francesco's marriage record in 1881 says that his mother is living.

Giuseppe marries Angela Grizzaffi, Anna Maria's sister, on 8 November 1880.

Francesco marries twice, first to Maria Antonia Gennaro, Rosa's sister, on 31 October 1881. This marriage includes a dispensation due to consanguinity.

Giuseppe dies at age 46 (b. 28 Jul 1852) on 6 January 1899 at 4:30 pm. This record does not mention that he leaves a widow, Angela.

Vincenza dies, unmarried, at age 38 (b. 1864) on 10 May 1902.[1]

Salvatrice dies a widower aged 80 on 17 February 1907.[2]

Francesco remarries, to his first cousin, Giovanna Spatafora, who is also a widow, on 2 March 1908.[3]
