Biography

Maria Antonia Gennaro is born in Corleone and baptized Mariam Antoniam on 14 March 1860. She is the daughter of Luciano Gennaro and Lucia Cascio. Her godparents are Leoluca Geraci and Orsola di Gregorio, a married couple.[1]

Maria Antonia marries her second cousin Francesco Cascio in Corleone on 31 October 1881. This marriage includes a dispensation due to third degree consanguinity.[2] Francesco's brother, Giovanni Cascio, is married to Maria Antonia's sister, Rosa Gennaro. The reasons for the granting of dispensation are listed in the linked source.[3] Her mother and husband are first cousins, once removed, making them second cousins, or fourth degree related by blood.

They have at least six children: Salvatrice (1882), Lucia (1884), Leoluca (1886), Luciano (1887), Angela (1888), and Carmelo (1890).

Note: For a table of Latin baptismal names and their Italian equivalents, and a discussion of naming conventions among the Corleonesi, see the Cascio Family Space.

Salvatrice is born 12 August 1882 and named after her father's mother, as is customary for the first daughter. The birth record for Salvatrice gives her parents as Francesco Cascio, age 24, borgese, living at 13 via Puccio with wife Maria Antonia Gennaro, industriosa (manufacturer or trader). A margin note says Salvatrice marries Giuliano Riela on 6 February 1907.

Salvatrice is baptized Salvatrix on 16 August, named for her paternal grandmother. Her godparents are Dominicus di Miceli and Carmela Triolo. There is no margin note on her record about a future marriage, but the fact that she has a younger sister with a different name indicates she survives at least until the end of 1884.

Lucia is born 22 November 1884 to Francesco Cascio, 26, borgese, and his wife, Maria Antonia Gennaro, his wife, at 13 via Puccio, Corleone. She is named for her maternal grandmother, Lucia Cascio (the prior relationship of Francesco and his mother-in-law is unknown.) A margin note in the civil record indicates that Lucia marries Calogero Governali in 1906 or 1907. She is baptized the same day. Her godparents are Michaelangelo Gennaro and Biagia Jovino.

The birth record for Leoluca (b. 24 Jul 1886), gives his parents as Francesco, age 28, a "borgese" or middle class person (burgher), and Maria Antonia Gennaro, no age, a wife, homemaker, and domestic partner. They live at 22 Via Puccio, Corleone. Leoluca is named after his maternal grandfather.

Luciano is born 17 November 1887 and baptized Lucianum on 19 November. He is named after his maternal grandfather. His godparents are Carmelo Buccheri and Maria Antonia Gennaro.

Angela is born and baptized 18 October 1888. Her godparents are her uncle and aunt, Salvator Cascio and Maria Grizzaffi.

Carmelo is born 10 February 1890 and baptized three days later. His godparents are Giovanni Scalisi and Giovanna Gennaro, a married couple.[4]

Death of Maria Antonia

Maria Antonia dies at age 30 (b. 1860) on 3 May 1890. Her husband and parents all survive her.[5]

Angela marries Carlo Taverna on 13 October 1904.

Lucia marries Calogero Governali on 26 November 1906. Her father is still living.[6]

Salvatrice marries Giuliano Riela on 6 February 1907.[7]

Leoluca marries Bernarda Taverna, Carlo's sister, on 29 October 1908.
