Francesco Cascio is born 22 October 1858 and baptized 23 October. He is the son of Leoluca Cascio and Salvatrice Ligotino. His godparents are Don Giovanni Castelli and his wife Donna Rosalia Gagliardo.[1]
Francesco's father dies age 64, on 19 April 1872.
Francesco marries Maria Antonia Gennaro on 31 October 1881 in Corleone. This marriage includes a dispensation due to consanguinity: they are second cousins.[2] His oldest brother, Giovanni, marries Maria Antonia's sister, Rosa, in 1877.
Francesco and Maria Antonia have at least six children: Salvatrice (1882), Lucia (1884), Leoluca (1886), Luciano (1887), Angela (1888), and Carmelo (1890). The first four are named after his mother, her mother, his father, and her father, as is customary. See the Cascio Family Space for a short discussion on naming conventions.
Salvatrice is born 12 August 1882. The civic birth notice for Salvatrice, born when Francesco is 24, identifies him as a borgese. Maria Antonia is an industriosa (manufacturer or trader); the family lives at 13 via Puccio. She is baptized Salvatrix on 16 August. Her godparents are Domenico di Miceli and Carmela Triolo.
Lucia, known from both civic birth and church infant baptismal records, is born and baptized on the same day, 22 November 1884. Her godparents are Michaelangelo Gennaro and Biagia Jovino.
The birth record for Leoluca (b. 24 Jul 1886), identifies his parents as Francesco, age 28, a "borgese" or middle class person (burgher), and Maria Antonia Gennaro, no age, a wife, homemaker, and domestic partner. They live at 22 Via Puccio, Corleone.
Luciano is born 17 November 1887 and baptized Lucianum on 19 November. He is named after his maternal grandfather. His godparents are Carmelo Buccheri and Maria Antonia Gennaro (the same name as his mother).
Carmelo is born 10 February 1890 and baptized three days later. His godparents are Giovanni Scalisi and Giovanna Gennaro, a married couple.[3]
Maria Antonia dies at age 30 (b. 1860) on 3 May 1890.
Around 1900, two of Francesco's future sons-in-law, Carlo Taverna and Giuliano Riela, are active in local mafia leadership.[4]
Angela marries Carlo Taverna on 13 October 1904.
Lucia marries Calogero Governali on 26 November 1906. Her father is still living.[5]
Salvatrice marries Giuliano Riela on 6 February 1907.[6]
Francesco remarries, to Giovanna Spatafora, a widow, on 2 March 1908. A second degree consanguinity is discovered in a collateral line (they are first cousins), and dispensation received 27 February 1908.[7][8]
Leoluca marries Bernarda Taverna, Carlo's sister, on 29 October 1908. Francesco is still living at this time.
