Biography

Birth and Childhood

Biagio (Blasio in church records) Cascio (sometimes Castro or lo Cascio) is a contadino (peasant) or agricola (farmer) born 16 April 1842 in his parents' home in Corleone. He is the son of Leoluca Cascio, age 32 (b. 1810), agricola, and Giovanna Giuffrida, age 30 (b. 1812). His birth is reported by his father. Within the same document (on the side recording his baptism), Biagio is also called Biagio lo Cascio. Biagio is baptized the same day. His godparents are Vincenzo Ligotino and his paternal aunt Carmela Cascio, a married couple.

Biagio has at least one younger brother, Salvatore (1846), who also marries in Corleone. Their mother, Giovanna, dies on 2 March 1850 at age 40. Their father, Leoluca, is remarried by 1852, to Salvatrice Ligotino. Leoluca and Salvatrice have at least eight children together.

Marriage and Children

Biagio marries Caterina (Catharina in church records) Morello on 20 June 1868 in the Church[1], and on 18 July in the civil record. It is the first marriage for either of them. There are two sets of civil allegati for their marriage: an 1867 record includes their birth record extracts, but no marriage publication. The 1868 allegati include both. Biagio's father and both Caterina's parents are still living at this time.

Biagio and Caterina have at least ten children together: two daughters named Giovanna (1869 and 1880), Leoluca (1872), Giuseppe (1875), Calogero (1877), Maria (1882), Giuseppa (1885), Carmelo (1887), Antonina (1890), and Angelo (1893).

The first daughter named Giovanna is born and baptized Joannam on 7 July 1869. In this record, her father's surname is given as Castro. Her godparents are Joseph Guarino and Lucia d'Anna, a married couple.

Giovanna dies on 13 April 1871 at a year and nine months of age.

See the Cascio Family Space for a short discussion on naming conventions.

Leoluca is born and baptized Leonemlucam on 8 August 1872. His godfather is Julius Amore, who is unmarried.

Giuseppe is born and baptized Joseph on 10 February 1875. His godfather is also his namesake and maternal grandfather, Giuseppe Morello.

Calogero is born 3 November 1877 and baptized the next day. His godfather is his maternal uncle Leoluca Morello, who is unmarried.

The second daughter named Giovanna is baptized Joannam on 1 June 1880, the day of her birth. Her godparents are her father's half siblings, Giuseppe and Vincenza Cascio, brother and sister.

Maria is born at 18 via Puccio in Corleone on 11 November 1882, to Biagio Cascio, age 40, agricola (farmer) and Caterina Morello, contadina (peasant). She is baptized Mariam the next day. Her godparents are Andrea Palumbo and Lucia, his unmarried sister.

Giuseppa (Josepha) is born and baptized on 15 September 1885. Her godparents are Antonino la Barba and Giovanna Grizzaffi.

Carmelo is born 7 December 1887 and baptized Carmelum on 10 December. His godparents are Filippo Grizzaffi and Rosa la Barba, who are not married.

Antonina is born 30 January 1890 and baptized two days later, named after a maternal aunt. Her godparents are Antonino lo Bello and Orsola di Miceli, a married couple.[2]

Angelo is born at the same address on 5 November 1893; Biagio is 51. He is baptized Anselmum on 16 November. His godmother is Jacobina Di Cursi.

Giovanna marries Pietro Majuri on 13 November 1897.

Giuseppe marries his first cousin Biagia Cascio on 18 November 1902. This record contains a dispensation due to second degree consanguinity.
