Biography

Carmela Cascio is born and baptized 6 December 1818. She is the daughter of Giuseppe Cascio and Maria Oliveri. Her godparents are Stefano and Carmela (Streva) Cascio, a married couple.

There was an older sister with the same name, born in 1811, who dies the year before Carmela's birth, at age six.

Carmela marries Vincenzo Ligotino[1][2] on 13 January 1840. Giuseppe has died by this time, and Maria is still living.

In January 1841, the year before their first known child is born, Vincenzo and Carmela, already married, stand as godparents to Maria Ligotino, daughter of Salvatore Ligotino and Francesca Cascio, who stand as Anna Maria's godparents the following year. Carmela and Francesca are sisters. Vincenzo and Salvatore, their husbands, are first cousins.

Carmela and Vincenzo have at least eight children together: Anna Maria (1842), Salvatrice (1845), Giovanna (1848), two sons named Salvatore (1851 and 1853), Lucia (1855), Giovanni (1858), and Maria Rosa (1863).

Anna Maria is born and baptized on 4 January 1842. She is named after her paternal grandmother,as is traditional for the first born daughter. Her godparents are Salvatore Ligotino and her maternal aunt Francesca Castro, a married couple.
Salvatrice is born and baptized on 25 January 1845. Her godparents are Liborio Grizzaffi and Serafina di Palermo, a married couple.
Giovanna is born and baptized on 8 February 1848 in Corleone. Her godparents are Giuseppe Ligotino and Giovanna Cascio, a married couple. Her godmother is her maternal aunt, and her godfather is also her paternal uncle by blood.
The first son named Salvatore is born and baptized on 12 January 1851. He is named after his paternal grandfather as is traditional for the first born son. His godparents are Mariano di Miceli and Lucia Todaro, a married couple.

He dies on 27 July, at six months of age.

The second son named Salvatore is born and baptized Salvatorem on 27 January 1853. His godparents are Gaetano Trombadore and Rosa di Miceli.

He also dies at six months of age, on 17 August.

Lucia is born and baptized Luciam on 3 May 1855. Her godparents are Vincentius Maida and Emmanuela Cascio.
Giovanni is born and baptized Joannem on 18 April 1858. His godparents are Salvator Marino and his paternal aunt Lucia Ligotino.
Maria Rosa is born and baptized Mariam Rosam on 10 December 1863. Her godparents are Dominicus Liggio and Margharita Moscato, a married couple.

Anna Maria marries Vincenzo Guarino on 7 November 1864.

Salvatrice marries Leonardo Cascio, son of the late Leoluca and Giovanna Giuffrida, on 27 September 1875. It is the first marriage for either of them. Leonardo's stepmother, of unknown relation, is Salvatrice Ligotino.

Carmela's older sister, Francesca (b. 1815), married to Salvatore Ligotino, Vincenzo's brother, dies in the summer of 1879.

Carmela's daughter, Giovanna, dies at age 30 (b. 1849), on 11 November 1879. She is the wife of Giovanni Provenzano.

In November 1880, the Church convenes a High Court to confirm the paternity of Francesca's daughter, Lucia, on the eve of Lucia's marriage to Giovanni Provenzano, Giovanna's widower. Carmela's husband, Vincenzo, is accused and found to be innocent by the office of the Archbishop. The story of this inquiry is on its own page, here.

Carmela's sister, Giovanna (and the namesake of Carmela's late daughter), dies on 1 January 1881, survived by her husband, Giuseppe Ligotino, Vincenzo's brother.

Carmela dies five days later, reportedly at age 63 (she is 62) on 6 January. Vincenzo survives her and does not remarry.

Rosa (1863) marries Giachino Spatafora on 26 September 1881.

Carmela and Vincenzo's son, Giovanni, marries in August 1882, to Leoluchina Di Palermo, the daughter of Gaetano Di Palermo and Maria Rosa Cascio. Maria Rosa is Carmela's niece, the daughter of her brother, Leoluca. When Giovanni marries, his father is still living.

On 14 October 1882, at 7 via Ligotino, Corleone, Rosa dies at age 19 (b. 1863). Giachino remarries, to his second cousin, Biagia Cutrone (daughter of Girolama Cascio), in 1883. Girolama is Carmela's cousin.

Vincenzo dies at age 76 (b. 1811) on 11 May 1887.
