Biography

Giovanna Ligotino is born and baptized on 8 February 1848 in Corleone. She is the daughter of Vincenzo Ligotino and Carmela Cascio. Her godparents are Giuseppe Ligotino and Giovanna Cascio, a married couple. Her godmother is her maternal aunt. Her godfather is also her paternal uncle by blood.

Giovanna marries Giovanni Provenzano^[1] on 11 February 1872. Her parents are both living. They have at least two children together, two daughters named Lucia (1875 and 1877), after their paternal grandmother.

The first daughter dies on 19 March 1876 at eight months of age.

Giovanna dies at age 30 (b. 1849) on 11 November 1879.^[2][3]Her husband, Giovanni, survives her.

After her death, Lucia Ligotino, marries her widower. Lucia is the daughter of Salvatore and Francesca Cascio. Giovanna and Lucia are first cousins: their mothers, Carmela and Francesca, are sisters. Giovana and Lucia are also second cousins on their fathers' sides: their fathers, Vincenzo and Salvatore, are first cousins.

Before Lucia and Giovanni wed, Lucia's paternity is formally questioned by the office of the Archbishop. Giovanna's father, Vincenzo, is accused of being Lucia's father: his name is written first in Lucia's baptismal record, then crossed out and replaced with Salvatore's. Giovanna and Giovanni's surviving daughter named Lucia marries Giuseppe Gennaro on 1 December 1893. Lucia's cousin of the same name marries the previous day.
