Giovanni Provenzano is born 15 June 1849 and baptized the next day. He is the son of Luca Provinzano and Lucia Cutrone. His godparents are Maestro Antonino Gallo and Bernarda Cimino, a married couple.
It appears he is at least the second son with this name. A brother born in 1843 is presumed to have died in infancy.
Giovanni marries Giovanna Ligotino, daughter of Vincenzo and Carmela Cascio, on 11 February 1872. They have at least two children, both daughters named Lucia (1875 and 1877), after Giovanni's mother.
The first daughter dies on 19 March 1876 at eight months of age.
Giovanna dies at age 30 (b. 1849) on 11 November 1879.
Giovanni remarries the following year on 27 November 1880. His second wife, Lucia Ligotino, daughter of the late Salvatore and Francesca Cascio, and his first wife are first cousins on their mothers' sides. The Church matrimonial record contains a dispensation for consanguinity, due to the relationship between his wives. Before Giovanni and Lucia marry, there is a Church High Court inquiry into Lucia's paternity. The story of this inquiry is on its own page, here.
Giovanni and Lucia have at least five children: two daughters named Francesca (1883 and 1890), Leoluca (1886), and two sons named Salvatore (1888 and 1891), named after Lucia's parents.
The first daughter named Francesca is born 12 October 1883 and baptized the next day. There are no civil birth notices in the FamilySearch archives from 1883 for Corleone. However, the civil death record for Francesca, age two, tells us that her father is a borgese.
Leoluca is born 11 September 1886 in Corleone and baptized the next day. His godparents are Leoluca Grizzaffi and Giuseppa Crescimanno, who are both unmarried.[1] He is named after his paternal grandfather. On 12 September 1886 in Corleone, Giovanni Provenzano, age 37 (b. 1849), contadino, reports the birth of his son, Leoluca, to his wife, Lucia Ligotino, in their home on via San Giovanni, #24. Witnesses are Rosario Schillaci, 35 (b. 1851), and Stefano Russo, 34 (b. 1852), contadini. They testify to the identity of Giovanni, who cannot read or write.[2]
The first son named Salvatore is born 7 December 1888 and baptized the next day. His godparents are Cristoforo di Miceli and Vincenza Triolo. He is presumed to have died before his brother is born in 1891.
The second daughter named Francesca dies at five months of age (b. Feb) on 25 July 1890.
The second son named Salvatore is born and baptized 20 June 1891. His godparents are Calogero Russo and Rosa Cerniglia, a married couple.[3]
Giovanni's daughter from his first marriage, the surviving Lucia, marries Giuseppe Gennaro on 1 December 1893. Lucia's cousin of the same name, Rocco's daughter, marries the previous day.
Salvatore marries Marianna Listi on 18 January 1920 in Corleone.[4]
