Biography

Lucia Ligotino is born 11 March 1855 in Corleone and baptized Luciam the following day. Her parents are initially recorded as Vincentio Ligotino and Francisca Cascio, but her father's first name is corrected to Salvatore. Her godparents are Don Biagio Gennusa and Carmela Caranzaro, a married couple. Lucia may be named after her maternal aunt.

Lucia has a cousin with the same name, born later the same year, who will marry the brother of Lucia's future husband.

A Church High Court hearing is held 25 years later to determine who Lucia's father is. Her mother, who died in 1879, is charged with having had relations with both Salvatore, her husband, and with Vincenzo Ligotino. Mention is made of there being at least two Vincenzo Ligotinos of Francesca's acquaintance: the husband of Agata di Miceli, and Salvatore's brother, who has died by this time; and the husband of Carmela Cascio, Francesca's sister, who is living. Carmela's husband and Francesca's are cousins.

According to the written record found in the Church matrimonial records for 1880-89 and dated 8 Nov. 1880, the Court concludes that Francesca's husband is the natural and legitimate father of Lucia.

Those testifying include brothers Giuseppe Ligotino and Vincenzo Ligotino (the accused husband of Carmela, mentioned above), sons of the late Salvatore and Anna Maria Puccio, borgesi (landowners), of ages 75 and 70, respectively. Giuseppe and Vincenzo are first cousins of Lucia's father, Salvatore, both married to Lucia's maternal aunts, Giovanna and Carmela.

Lucia marries Giovanni Provenzano[1] on 27 November 1880. This record contains a dispensation for consanguinity, due to the relationship between Giovanni's late wife, Giovanna, and Lucia. Giovanna is the daughter of the previously mentioned Vincenzo Ligotino and Carmela Cascio. Not only are Lucia and Giovanna first cousins on their mothers' sides, they are second cousins on their fathers' sides.[2]

It seems probable that the inquiry into Lucia's paternity would have begun with the research required before Lucia and Giovanni's marriage. In any marriage, at the minimum, their baptismal records would be retrieved, and Lucia's originally records Vincenzo as her father, possibly in error. Her uncle Vincenzo would have presented her for baptism in his brother's stead, because Salvatore was in Palermo on business when Lucia was born. The story of this inquiry is on its own page, here.

Lucia and Giovanni have at least five children: two daughters named Francesca (1883 and 1890), Leoluca (1886), and two sons named Salvatore (1888 and 1891).

The first daughter named Francesca is born 12 October 1883 and baptized Franciscam the next day. Her godparents are Giuseppe Gagliano and Liboria Colletti, who is unmarried. She dies on 23 September 1885 in her parents' home in #24 via Largo San Giovanni, Corleone, at age two years.

Leoluca is born 11 September 1886 in Corleone and baptized the next day. His godparents are Leoluca Grizzaffi and Giuseppa Crescimanno, who are both unmarried.[3] He is named after his paternal grandfather.

The first son named Salvatore is born 7 December 1888 and baptized the next day. His godparents are Cristoforo di Miceli and Vincenza Triolo. He is presumed to have died before his brother is born in 1891.

The second daughter named Francesca dies at five months of age (b. Feb) on 25 July 1890.

The second son named Salvatore is born and baptized 20 June 1891. His godparents are Calogero Russo and Rosa Cerniglia, a married couple.[4]

Salvatore marries Marianna Listi on 18 January 1920 in Corleone.[5]
