Biography

Biagia Ligotino is born and baptized on 19 September 1838. She is the daughter of Salvatore Ligotino and Francesca Cascio. Her godparents are her maternal uncle Leoluca Cascio and his wife, Giovanna.[1]

Salvatore dies at age 45 on 13 March 1856.

Six months later, Biagia is married to Giovanni Riina,[2] a farmer.[3] Biagia and her mother both grew up on via Sant'Elena, where Giovanni also lives as a child.

Biagia and Giovanni have at least eleven children, spanning 25 years: Maria (1858), Giovanni (1860), two sons named Nicolo' (1862 and 1869), two sons named Salvatore (1865 and 1877), Francesca (1866), Giovanna (1872), Lucia (1875), Leoluca (1880), and Antonina (1883).

Maria is born 20 July 1858 in via S. Elena, Corleone. Giovanni reports her birth, and Biagia's age at the time as 20 (b. 1838). She is baptized the same day as Mariam. Her godmother is Biagia's maternal aunt Giovanna Castro, wife of Giuseppe Ligotino.

Giovanni is born and baptized Joannem on 4 August 1860. His godmother is Agata di Miceli (possibly the wife of Vincenzo Ligotino, born around 1806.)

The first son named Nicolo' is born and baptized Nicolaum on 19 June 1862. His godparents are Stefano Rizzotto and Antonia Governali, a married couple.

The first son named Salvatore is born in the hour before midnight on 22 November 1865 and baptized the next day (baptizavi infantem natum heri hora 24) as Salvatorem. His godfather is Vincenzo Gariffo. He dies at 18 days of age on 9 December. See the Cascio Family Space for a short discussion on naming conventions.

Francesca is born 20 October 1866 in her parents' home in via San Giovan Battista, Corleone. Her birth is reported by her father, Giovanni, age 38. He gives Biagia's age as 28, for an estimated birth year of 1838. She is baptized the next day. Her godfather is Giovanni Rizzo.

Nicolo' dies at six years of age, on 30 September 1868.

The second son named Nicolo' is born 2 September 1869 and baptized Nicolaum the next day. His godparents are Leoluca Vintaloro and Liboria Governali, a married couple.

The second boy named Nicolo' dies on 7 January 1872 at two years and four months of age.

Giovanna is born and baptized Joannam on 14 September 1872. Her godparents are Biagio Provenzano and Rosa di Palermo, a married couple.

Lucia is born and baptized 16 February 1875. Her godparents are Calogero and Caterina Giandalone, brother and sister.

The second son named Salvatore is born 7 November 1877 and baptized the next day. His godmother is his aunt Lucia Ligotino, who is unmarried.

Leoluca is born and baptized Leonemlucam on 9 September 1880. His godparents are Giovanni Gennaro and Giovanna Lisotto.

Antonina is born 26 August 1883 and baptized Antoninam the next day. Her godparents are Giuseppe Ligotino and Maria Concetta Castellana.

Maria marries Filippo Quaglino on 1 October 1884. It is the first marriage for either of them.

Antonina dies at two years and one month of age on 8 October 1885.

Francesca marries Vincenzo Oliveri on 1 March 1892.

Giovanna marries Matteo Governali on 29 January 1894. Her parents are both still living.

Lucia marries Francesco Pomilla on 13 October 1900. Giovanni has died by this time.

Salvatore marries Caterina Orlando on 27 January 1901.[4]
