Giovanni Riina is born around 1827 in Corleone, the son of Nicolo' Riina and Maria Palumbo.
In 1834, Nicolo' Riina, age 35 (b. 1799), his wife Maria, 25 (b. 1809), and their children Maria, 9 (b. 1825), Giovanni, 7 (b. 1827), Salvatore, 3 (b. 1831), and Vincenza, 1 (b. 1833), live near the strada di Mannina.[1]
Giovanni is a farmer (agricola, villico). He marries Biagia Ligotino on 14 September 1856. His parents are both living at this time.
Giovanni and Biagia have at least eleven children: Maria (1858), Giovanni (1860), two sons named Nicolo' (1862 and 1869), two sons named Salvatore (1865 and 1877), Francesca (1866), Giovanna (1872), Lucia (1875), Leoluca (1880), and Antonina (1883). Maria and Francesca are known from their marriage allegati, while their sisters and brothers are known from baptismal records.
Maria is born 20 July 1858 in via S. Elena, Corleone. Giovanni, age 28 (b. 1830), agricola, reports her birth.
The first son named Salvatore dies at 18 days of age on 9 December 1865.
When Francesca is born 20 October 1866 in her parents' home in via San Giovan Battista, Corleone, her birth is reported by her father. Giovanni gives his age as 38 (b. 1828). Francesca is named after her maternal grandmother.
The first son named Nicolo' dies at six years of age on 30 September 1868. His brother, also named Nicolo', is born the following year.
The second son named Nicolo' dies on 7 January 1872 at two years and four months of age.
The second son named Salvatore is born 7 November 1877 and baptized the next day. His godmother is his maternal aunt Lucia Ligotino, who is unmarried.[2]
Maria marries Filippo Quaglino on 1 October 1884. It is the first marriage for either of them.
Antonina dies at two years and one month of age on 8 October 1885.
Francesca marries Vincenzo Oliveri on 1 March 1892.
Giovanna marries Matteo Governali on 29 January 1894. Her parents are both still living.
Lucia marries Francesco Pomilla on 13 October 1900. Giovanni has died by this time.
Salvatore marries Caterina Orlando on 27 January 1901.[3]
