Biography

Francesca lo Cascio is born 8 February 1816 and baptized the next day. She is the daughter of Giuseppe lo Cascio and Maria Oliveri. Her godparents are Francesco and her paternal aunt Lucia Palazzo, a married couple who live near her family on via Sant'Elena in Corleone.

In 1831, Francesca's sister, Giovanna, marries Giuseppe Ligotino, on 29 April.

Francesca marries Salvatore Ligotino[1], a farmer, and the first cousin of Giuseppe, on 15 October 1837. It is the first marriage for them both. Salvatore's father, also named Giuseppe, is living, and his mother has recently died during the cholera epidemic.

Salvatore and Francesca have at least seven children: Biagia (1838), Maria (1841), Giovanna (1843), Giuseppe (1846), two sons named Leoluca (1849 and 1851), and Lucia (1855).

Biagia is born and baptized on 19 September 1838. Her godparents are her maternal uncle Leoluca Cascio and his wife, Giovanna.

Francesca's sister, Carmela, marries Vincenzo Ligotino, brother of Giovanna's husband, Giuseppe, on 13 January 1840.

Maria is born 29 January 1841 and baptized the next day. Her godparents are her paternal uncle Vincenzo and maternal aunt Carmela Ligotino, a married couple.

Giovanna is born and baptized on 24 August 1843. She shares a name with a maternal aunt who also marries a Ligotino brother. Her godparents are Michaele and Concetta Virgadamo, brother and sister.

Giuseppe is born and baptized 7 December 1846. His baptismal record appears in the church matrimonial records for 1871-78, on the same certificate with that of Lucia Palumbo. No other evidence of their marriage has been found.

The first son named Leoluca is born and baptized on 8 December 1849. His godparents are Domenico Vinci and Biagia di Palermo, wife of Giuseppe (whose last name is not given). He dies on 15 August 1850 at nine months of age.

The second son named Leoluca is born 11 November 1851 to Salvatore Ligotino, age 40, agricola (farmer), and Francesca Cascio, age 36, of Corleone, via S. Elena.

Salvatore dies at age 46 (b. 1810) on 13 March 1856. Francesca survives him.

Biagia marries Giovanni Riina on 14 September 1856.

Maria marries Rocco Provenzano on 25 October 1858.

Giuseppe marries Rosa Cannaliato on 23 September 1878. This record includes a dispensation for consanguinity. They are second cousins, once removed.

Francesca dies at age 63 on 18 July 1879, the widow of Salvatore.

Giovanna marries Biagio Pollara on 29 September 1879.

Paternity of Lucia

A Church High Court hearing is held 25 years after the fact, to determine who is Lucia's father. Her mother is charged with having had relations with both Salvatore, her husband, and with Vincenzo Ligotino. She denies the accusation. Mention is made of there being at least two Vincenzo Ligotinos of Francesca's acquaintance: the husband of Agata di Miceli (who has passed away by this time), and the husband of Carmela Cascio, her sister, who testifies.

According to the written record found in the Church matrimonial records for 1880-89 and dated 8 Nov. 1880, the Court concludes that Francesca's husband is the natural and legitimate father of Lucia.

Those testifying include Giuseppe Ligotino and Vincenzo Ligotino (Maria's godfather), sons of the late Salvatore and of Anna Maria Nuncio (an error, I believe, actually Puccio), borgesi, of ages 75 and 70, respectively. Giuseppe is married to Giovanna Cascio, Francesca's sister. Vincenzo's wife is Carmela, another of Francesca's sisters.

The story of this inquiry is on its own page, here.

More on Francesca's Children

Shortly after the paternity hearing, Lucia marries Giovanni Provenzano, a widower, on 27 November 1880. Giovanni's first wife is Lucia's maternal cousin, Giovanna Ligotino, daughter of Vincenzo and Carmela.

Giuseppe marries Rosa Cannaliato's sister, Maria, on 23 October 1881.

Francesca's daughter, Maria, dies at age 41 (b. 1841) on 22 March 1882. Her husband, Rocco, survives her.

Leoluca dies at age 58 on 26 May 1910. His wife, Maria, survives him.[2]
