Biography

Giovanna Giuffrida is born around 1810 in Corleone, based on the ages given at the births of her sons, and at her death. She is the daughter of Leonardo Giuffrida and Antonia di Lucia, a married couple from the Papal States.

Giovanna marries twice, first to Domenico Chiazzisi, who is also from the Papal States. Their marriage record has not yet been found; they may have married on the mainland.

Domenico dies on 18 July 1837 at age 38 (b. 1799)[1] at the height of a cholera epidemic in Corleone.

Giovanna remarries to Leoluca Cascio on 20 May 1838. Giovanna's parents are still living at this time.[2]

Giovanna and Leoluca have at least five children together: Giuseppe (1839), Leonardo (1840), Biagio (1842), Maria Rosa (1844), and Salvatore (1846).

Giuseppe is born and baptized on 24 February 1839. He is named after his paternal grandfather. His godparents are Giuseppe and Giovanna Ligotino, a married couple.

Leonardo, named after his maternal grandfather, is born and baptized on 28 August 1840. His godparents are Gaetano and Marianna Vinci, a married couple.

Biagio and Salvatore are both known from their civil marriage allegati, which include birth records. Maria Rosa's birth date is based on her given age at the birth of one of her children.

Biagio is born 16 April 1842. The birth record extract in his marriage allegati give two versions of his surname, Cascio and Lo Cascio. The priest and midwife who report his birth give his parents' as Leoluca Cascio, age 32 (b. 1810), agricola, and Giovanna Giuffrida, age 30 (b. 1812). He is baptized the same day. His godparents are Vincenzo Ligotino and his paternal aunt Carmela Cascio, a married couple.

Maria Rosa is born and baptized on 18 January 1844. Her godparents are Rosario Marullo and Maria Rosa Salemi, a married couple.

Salvatore is born on 9 June 1846, reportedly when both his parents are 38 years old. This age gives an estimated birth year of 1808.

Giuseppe dies at age ten (b. 1839) on 24 October 1849.

Death of Giovanna

Giovanna dies at age 40 (b. 1810) on 24 February 1850.[3] A letter in Latin from the church, in the allegati for Salvatore's 1868 marriage to Anna Maria Grizzaffi, says that she dies on 2 March.[4]

Leoluca is remarried by 1852, to Salvatrice Ligotino. They have at least eight children together.

Maria Rosa marries Gaetano di Palermo on 7 February 1864.

Biagio marries Caterina Morello in 1867.

Salvatore marries Anna Maria Grizzaffi on October 14, 1868.

Leonardo marries a woman with the same name as his father's second wife: Salvatrice Ligotino, daughter of Vincenzo and Carmela Cascio. Leonardo and Salvatrice marry on 27 September 1875. It is the first marriage for either of them.
