Biography

Giuseppe Ligotino is born 25 May 1840 and baptized the next day as Josephum. He is the son of Carmelo Ligotino and Maria Rosa Mannina. His godparents are Andrea Carrabba and Bernarda Ligotino, unmarried daughter of Salvatore. (The record of his baptism mistakenly calls his father Giuseppe, also, though Carmelo's name is correctly reported in the baptismal certificate in the Church's matrimonial record.

Giuseppe's father dies some time before 1871, when his older brother, Vincenzo, marries.

The baptismal record for Maria Concetta Castellana is just before that of Giuseppe's in the 1871-78 matrimonial records. They marry on 30 September 1877.

Giuseppe and Maria Concetta have at least four children: Maria Rosa (1878), Carmela (c. 1879), Salvatrice (1881), and Carmelo (1883). All are baptized in San Martino parish, which serves Corleone, Sicily.

Carmela is known only from her death record, at age nine months.

Salvatrice dies at age one year, one month, and 17 days, on 17 July 1882.

Carmelo dies at four months of age on 7 June 1883.

Maria Concetta dies at 31 years of age on 28 October 1885. Her parents and husband survive her.

Giuseppe and Maria Concetta's Italian names are derived from their Latin ones, used in church records. For a table of select Latin baptismal names and their Italian equivalents, and a discussion of naming conventions among the Corleonesi, see the Cascio Family Space.

Maria Rosa marries her third cousin, Paolo Gulotta, on 10 October 1905. Giuseppe is still living at this time.
