Biography

Maria Rosa Mannina is born 13 July 1807 and baptized the next day. She is the daughter of Francesco Mannina and Antonia Scimonetto. Her godparents are Giuseppe and Caterina Grizzaffi, a married couple.

In 1811 Maria Rosa, age four lives with her parents, brother, and sisters, on the road that leads from the strada di Oliva to Michele (strada che dirizze al Michele).

Maria Rosa is a peasant (contadina), as is her husband, Carmelo Ligotino. They have at least six children together: Salvatrice (1826), Anna Maria (1828), Salvatore (1830), Vincenzo (1833), two daughters named Lucia (1835 and 1837), and Giuseppe (1840).

Salvatrice is born in the 22nd hour and baptized on 24 November 1826. Her godparents are Calogero and Biagia Mannina, brother and sister.

Anna Maria is born 21 October 1828 and baptized the next day, named after her paternal grandmother. Her mother's last name is written in this record as Mandina). Her godparents are Giuseppe and Giacoma di Miceli, son and mother.

Salvatore is born and baptized 2 December 1830, named after his paternal grandfather. His godparents are his paternal uncle Giuseppe and aunt Lucia Ligotino, brother and sister.

Vincenzo is born 31 March 1833 in his parents' home in Corleone. His birth is reported by the midwife, who gives Maria Rosa's age as 26, for an estimated birth year of 1807. He is baptized the same day. His godparents are Antonino and Francesca di Miceli, a married couple.

The first daughter named Lucia is born and baptized on 2 November 1835. Lucia is named after a paternal aunt. Her godparents are Carmelo and Rosa Mondello, a married couple.

Lucia dies at a year and ten months of age on 18 August 1837, the summer of the first recorded cholera outbreak in western Europe.

The second daughter named Lucia is born 20 December 1837 and baptized the next day. Her godparents are Bernardo and Vincenza Ligotino, a married couple.

In 1839, Maria Rosa, 31, Carmelo, reportedly age 37 (he is 39 this year), and their children Salvatrice, 13, Anna Maria, 11, Salvadore, 9, Vincenzo, 7 (he is six), and Lucia, 2 (b. 1839), live on the strada di Trapani.

Giuseppe is born 25 May 1840 and baptized the next day as Josephum. His godparents are Andrea Carrabba and his paternal aunt Bernarda Ligotino, unmarried daughter of Salvatore.

Carmelo dies at age 43 (b. 1801) on 9 April 1844. Maria Rosa survives him.

Salvatrice marries Leoluca Cascio, a widower, on 29 April 1850.

Their son, Salvatore, marries Maddalena Gaglianello on 2 June 1856, and they have at least eleven children together.

Anna Maria marries Giuseppe Colletti on 23 November 1856 and they have at least seven children together.

Vincenzo marries for the first time at age 38 on 22 April 1871, to the widow Antonina Alfonso.

Vincenzo and Antonina have one daughter, named Maria Rosa after Vincenzo's mother. He dies only six months later, reportedly at age 60 (b. 1812), on 10 August 1872. He is actually only 39 years old, based on the civil birth record in his marriage record. His wife and mother survive him.

Giuseppe marries Maria Concetta Castellana on 30 September 1877.

Maria Rosa dies at age 72 (b. 1806) on 25 August 1880.

Lucia marries Ciro di Gregorio on 6 February 1881.

Salvatore dies at age 51 on 2 March 1882, shortly after the birth of a son, named Vincenzo.

Anna Maria dies at 56 years of age on 16 September 1884. Her husband survives her.
