Biography

Carmelo Ligotino is born in Corleone on 6 November 1800 and baptized the next day. He is the son of Salvatore Ligotino and Anna Maria Puccio. She is called Maria Anna in Carmelo's baptismal record. His godparents are Maestro Girolamo Gueli and Gaetana Gammanta, who are not married.

In the 1807 Church census, called a stato delle animo, Carmelo, his older sister Oliva, and younger brother Giuseppe, are living with their parents near the Chiesa di Canzoneri (Canzoneri church). Carmelo is reportedly only five years old.

Carmelo is a villico (farmer). He marries Maria Rosa Mannina on 9 January 1826. Their parents are all living at this time.

Carmelo and Maria Rosa have at least seven children together: Salvatrice (1826), Anna Maria (1828), Salvatore (1830), Vincenzo (1833), two daughters named Lucia (1835 and 1837), and Giuseppe (1840).

Salvatrice is born in the 22nd hour and baptized on 24 November 1826. Her godparents are Calogero and Biagia Mannina, brother and sister.

Anna Maria is born 21 October 1828 and baptized the next day. Her godparents are Giuseppe and Giacoma di Miceli, son and mother.

Salvatore is born and baptized 2 December 1830. His godparents are his paternal uncle Giuseppe and aunt Lucia Ligotino, brother and sister.

Vincenzo is born 31 March 1833 in his parents' home in Corleone. His birth is reported by the midwife. She reports Carmelo's age as 30, for an estimated birth year of 1803. Vincenzo is baptized the same day. His godparents are Antonino and Francesca di Miceli, a married couple.

The first daughter named Lucia is born and baptized on 2 November 1835. She is named after a paternal aunt. Her godparents are Carmelo and Rosa Mondello, a married couple.

Lucia dies at a year and ten months of age on 18 August 1837, the summer of the first recorded cholera outbreak in western Europe.

The second daughter named Lucia is born four months later, on 20 December, and baptized the next day. Her godparents are Bernardo and Vincenza Ligotino, a married couple.

In 1839, Carmelo, reportedly age 37 (he is 39 this year), lives with his wife, Maria Rosa, 31, and children Salvatrice, 13, Anna Maria, 11, Salvadore, 9, Vincenzo, 7 (he is six), and Lucia, 2 (b. 1839), on the strada di Trapani.

Giuseppe is born 25 May 1840 and baptized the next day as Josephum. His godparents are Andrea Carrabba and his paternal aunt Bernarda Ligotino, unmarried daughter of Salvatore.

Carmelo dies, reportedly at age 43 (he is 44) on 9 April 1844. His father and his wife survive him.

Salvatrice marries Leoluca Cascio, a widower, on 29 April 1850.

Carmelo's son, Salvatore, marries Maddalena Gaglianello on 2 June 1856, and they have at least eleven children together. When they marry, Maria Rosa is living.

Anna Maria marries Giuseppe Colletti on 23 November 1856, and they have at least seven children together.

The elder Vincenzo marries for the first time at age 38 on 22 April 1871, to the widow Antonina Alfonso. Vincenzo and Antonina have one child, a girl named after Vincenzo's mother, in 1872. Vincenzo dies six months later in the hospital, reportedly at age 60 (b. 1812), on 10 August 1872. He is actually only 39 years old, based on the civil birth record in his marriage record. His wife and mother survive him.

Giuseppe marries Maria Concetta Castellana on 30 September 1877.

Maria Rosa dies at age 72 (b. 1806) on 25 August 1880.

Lucia marries Ciro di Gregorio on 6 February 1881.

Salvatore dies at age 51 on 2 March 1882, shortly after the birth of a son, named Vincenzo, after his uncle.
