Caterina Marsalisi is born around 1782 in Corleone, the daughter of Mariano Marsalisi and Leoluchina Salemi, who married in 1780. She is named after her paternal grandmother.
Caterina marries Giuseppe Grizzaffi on 27 October 1799. Her parents are both still living.[1]
Caterina and Giuseppe have at least nine children: Calogero (1800), Vincenzo (1802), two daughters named Leoluchina (1804 and 1811), Francesca (1807), Mariano (1813), Lucia (1816), Maria (1818), and Bernarda (1822).
Calogero is born and baptized 13 October 1800. His godparents are Don Giuseppe Marsalisi and Anna Marsalisi, who is not married.
Vincenzo is born and baptized 31 August 1802, named after his paternal grandfather. His godparents are Maestro Agostino and Benedetta Zangara, a married couple.
Calogero dies on 24 September 1803, about a month before his third birthday.
The first daughter named Leoluchina, after her maternal grandmother, is born and baptized 18 December 1804. Her godparents are Maestro Vincenzo and Angela Graviano, a married couple.
She dies on 21 December 1805, three days after her first birthday.
Francesca is born and baptized on 1 January 1807. Her godparents are Domenico and Vincenza Trapani, father and daughter.
The second daughter named Leoluchina is born and baptized on 22 February 1811. Her godparents are Pasquale and Caterina Mistritta, a married couple.
In 1811 Caterina appears at age 29 (b. 1782), with Giuseppe, 51 (b. 1760), and three of their children in the stato delle anime, a Church census. Her name is so abbreviated that it might be either Antonina or Caterina. Of the two possibilities I considered, of known men named Giuseppe Grizzaffi of around the right age, this family is the better match. Compare with Giuseppe Grizzaffi and Antonina Addamo, who do not have any children by these names.
Caterina and Giuseppe's children in the stato delle anime are Vincenzo, 9 (b. 1802), Francesca, 5 (b. 1 Jan 1807), and Leoluchina, 1 (b. 22 Feb 1811). The family lives on the road that leads from the strada di Oliva to Michele (strada che dirizze al San Michaele Arcangelo). Their neighbors include the families of Teodoro and Antonino, Giuseppe's brothers, and Francesco Mannina.
Mariano is born and baptized 7 September 1813. His godparents are Bernardo and Giuseppa Mistritta, a married couple.
Lucia is born and baptized 28 July 1816. Her godparents are Arcangelo and Giuseppa Paternostro, a married couple.
Lucia dies on 8 July 1817 at eleven months of age.
Maria is born 8 September 1818 and baptized the next day. Her godparents are Giovanni and Antonia Mandina, son and mother.
Bernarda is born and baptized on 5 May 1822. Her godparents are Francesco and Maria Grizzaffi, a married couple.
Vincenzo dies, unmarried, at age 20 (b. 1802) on 24 June 1822. The record of his death calls his mother Caterina Macaluso.
Bernarda dies on 2 March 1823 at ten months of age.
Giuseppe dies at age 60 (b. 1765) on 4 November 1825. Caterina survives him.
Leoluchina dies, reportedly at age fifteen (she has just turned sixteen) on 27 February 1827.
Death of Caterina
Caterina dies suddenly, reportedly at age 60 (b. 1775---she is most likely 53) on 21 October 1835.[2]
Francesca dies, reportedly at age 28 (she is 30) on 15 April 1837.
Maria marries Giuseppe Morello, who is ten years older, on 4 June 1837. By this time, her parents have both died.
Mariano marries Giuseppa Sabella on 10 February 1839.
Mariano dies, reportedly at age 46 (he is 48) on 5 March 1862. His wife, Giuseppa, survives him.
Maria dies at age 62 on 29 April 1881, two months after her husband. The record of her death calls her mother Antonina (Giuseppe's mother's name.)
