Biography

Lucia Cutrone, the daughter of Matteo Cutrone and Rosa Puccio, is born and baptized on 13 January 1806 in Corleone. Her godparents are Girolamo Patti and his wife, Anna.[1]

Lucia is just shy of 24 when she marries Leoluca Provenzano on 10 January 1830. Her father has died by this time, and her mother is living.

Lucia and Leoluca have at least four children: Rocco (c. 1837), Matteo (c. 1840), and at least two sons named Giovanni (1843 and 1849).

Rocco is born around 1837-38 in Corleone, based on his ages at the births of his sons.

I estimate Matteo is born around 1840, ten years after his parents marry. He is named after his maternal grandfather.

Giovanni is born 15 June 1849 and baptized the next day. His godparents are Maestro Antonino Gallo and Bernarda Cimino, a married couple.

It appears he is at least the second son with this name. A brother born in 1843 is presumed to have died in infancy.

Rocco is a farmer (villico, agricoltore). He marries Maria Ligotino on 25 October 1858. His parents are living at this time.

Giovanni marries Giovanna Ligotino, Maria's cousin, on 11 February 1872. Leoluca has died by this time.

Giovanni's first wife, Giovanna, dies at age 30 (b. 1849) on 11 November 1879.

Giovanni remarries the following year on 27 November 1880. His second wife, Lucia Ligotino, is the younger sister of Rocco's wife, Maria. Because Lucia and Giovanni's first wife are first cousins on their mothers' sides, the Church matrimonial record contains a dispensation for consanguinity. Before Giovanni and Lucia marry, there is a Church High Court inquiry into Lucia's paternity. The story of this inquiry is on its own page, here. Lucia is still living when Giovanni marries for the second time.
