Biography

Rocco Provenzano is a farmer (villico, agricoltore) and landowner (borgese in 1893). Born in October 1837, he is the son of Leoluca Provenzano and Lucia Cutrone.[1]

Rocco marries twice, first to Maria Ligotino on 25 October 1858.

Rocco and Maria have at least eight children: Leoluca (1860), two sons named Salvatore (1862 and 1864), Giovanni (1868), two sons named Giuseppe (1871 and 1872), Lucia (1875), and Francesca (1878).

The first son named Salvatore, born in 1862, dies on 12 July 1863 at nine months of age. The first son named Giuseppe is presumed to have died before the second is born. See the Cascio Family Space for a short discussion on naming conventions.

Leoluca and the surviving Salvatore both marry in Corleone. Their marriage allegati include their civil birth records, from which we know Rocco and Maria's ages at their sons' births.

Leoluca is born 6 April 1860 in the S. Elena quarter of Corleone. According to Francesca Paola Gagliardo e De Luca, age 56, the midwife, who reports his birth, Maria is 21 (b. 1839) and Rocco is a 22 year old (b. 1838) agricoltore.

The second son named Salvatore is born on 10 November 1864 in his parents' home in via S. Elena, Corleone. This time Rocco, age 27 (b. 1837), villico, reports his birth. Maria is 23 (b. 1841).

Giovanni is born and baptized Joannem on 23 March 1868. His godparents are Nicolo' Lanza and Maria Cascio, a married couple.

The first son named Giuseppe is born and baptized Josephum on 5 February 1871. His godparents are Antonino Mancuso and Paola Governali, a married couple.

Giuseppe dies two weeks later, on 20 February 1871.

The second son named Giuseppe is born 19 June 1872 and baptized the next day as Josephum. His godparents are Carmelo Cortimiglia and Biagia, brother and sister.

Lucia is born and baptized on 20 August 1875. Her godparents are Franciscus d'Anna and Maria Rosa d'Anna, a married couple.

Francesca is born 10 June 1878 and baptized the next day. The name of her godfather is given as Vincenzo la Barbera, wife of Vincenzo Miliano.

Francesca dies on 23 November 1879, age one year and five months.

Maria dies at age 41 (b. 1841) on 22 March 1882. Rocco survives her.

Rocco remarries, to Camela Trombaturi, daughter of Leoluca Trombaturi and Lucia Paternostro, on 4 September 1882. Rocco's parents have both died by this time.[2]

Leoluca marries Lucia Listi in February, 1887.

Salvatore marries Vincenza Crapisi in April, 1890.

Lucia marries Francesco Todaro on 30 November 1893.[3]

Giovanni marries Maria Concetta Marsalisi on 29 September 1894.

Giuseppe marries Giuseppa Piranio on 30 January 1897. Rocco is still living at this time.

Rocco dies at age 63 (b. 1837) on 11 January 1901 in the 23rd hour. His second wife, Carmela, survives him.
