Vincenzo Maida is a soldato della Compagnia d'armi, a soldier of the society of arms, born on July 29, 1812 in Corleone, the son of Giuseppe Maida and Gaetana Palumbo. His godparents are Giuseppe Lanza and Rosalia Romano (single).[1] These armed rural guards worked closely with local mafias to negotiate the return of stolen goods to landowners.
Vincenzo has two cousins, brothers Bernardo and Antonino Palumbo, who are part of a notorious gang. A bounty is set for their capture or killing, and the brothers are either executed in late 1835 in Palermo or, according to lore, escaped the country. Another Palumbo brother, Vincenzo, is executed in 1837 for participating in a Republican insurrection.
