Biography

Margherita Quaglino is born and baptized on 24 December 1827, named after her maternal grandmother. She is the daughter of Filippo Quaglino and Anna Maria Colletto. Her godparents are Calogero and Vincenza Martorana, a married couple.

Margherita marries Giuseppe Ligotino, son of Bernardo Ligotino and Vincenza di Miceli, on 1 September 1856. Filippo and Anna Maria are both still living at this time.

Margherita's husband has the same name as his first cousin, the son of Vincenzo Ligotino and Agata di Miceli. Her husband's cousin was married to Margherita's sister, Lucia, until his death at age 33 in 1852. Days after Margherita marries Giuseppe, her sister Lucia remarries, to Leoluca Castro.

Margarita and her husband have at least seven children together, all known from their baptismal records: Vincenza (1857), Anna Maria (1858), Marianna (1861), Bernardo (1863), Lucia (1866), and twins Angela and Giovanna (1869). Anna Maria and Bernardo are also known from their marriage allegati.

Vincenza is born and baptized Vincentiam on 26 May 1857. Her godparents are Antoninus Cascio and Maria Felicia Scherma. The record does not indicate whether her godparents are married; presumably, Maria Felicia is the one linked, wife of Leoluca Quaglino, Margherita's brother.

Anna Maria is born 20 November 1858 in her parents' home in the S. Giovan Battista quarter of Corleone. According to the midwife, Francesca Paola de Luca, who reports her birth, Margherita is 29 (b. 1829) and Giuseppe is 28 (b. 1830), agricola. She is baptized Annam Mariam the next day. Her godparents are Innocentius Ligotino and Rosa, his sister.

Marianna is born 20 April 1861 (the month after the Proclamation of Turin unites the Kingdom of Italy) and baptized Mariannam the next day. Her godparents are Leoluca Piazza and his daughter, Marianna.

Bernardo is born on 22 September 1863 in his parents' home on via S. Giovan Battista, Corleone. His birth is reported by his father, Giuseppe, age 33 (b. 1830); Giuseppe gives Margherita's age as 35 (b. 1828). Bernardo is baptized the same day. He is baptized the same day, named after his paternal grandfather. His godparents are Leoluca Quaglino and Maria, his daughter. Maria dies the following year at age sixteen.

The first daughter named Lucia is born 29 June 1866 and baptized the next day. Her godmother is the unmarried Joanna Ligotino. She is presumed to have died by 1869, when her twin sisters are born.

Twins Angela and Giovanna are born and baptized on 3 December 1869. Angela's godmother is Oliva Ligotino, wife of Paschalis Cutrera (possibly this Oliva Ligotino, wife of Filippe Cutrera). Giovanna's godparents are Philippus Grizzaffi and Lucia, his sister: possibly Giovanna Lucia and her brother.

Giovanna dies on 24 December, at three weeks of age. There are two death records for Giovanna Ligotino on successive pages of the Corleone Church's death records for 24 December 1869.

Angela, her twin, dies on 9 March 1871 at a year and four months of age.

Vincenza marries Francesco la Russa, a widower, on 25 April 1881. Her parents are both still living at this time.

Marianna marries Pietro Marsala on 15 February 1885. Margherita and Giuseppe are both still living.

Anna Maria and Ciro Salemi complete the requirements for publication before marrying in Corleone, on 5 January 1887. It is the first marriage for either of them.

Bernardo and Maria Paternostro do the same on 6 October 1887. It is the first marriage for either of them.

Margherita dies at age 72 on 8 February 1900. Giuseppe survives her.
