  • Share burial information of soldiers
  • Confirm birth, marriage and death dates
  • Share additional military pension details where applicable

Interesting Mysteries to Solve

  • Who is Daniel Freeman in the roster?
  • Who is Charles Mitchell in the roster?
  • Who was the excitable young man killed in action at Olustee as described by Sergeant Stephens?
  • Who is Corporal George Grayson, listed as Company G, in the 1890 US Veteran Schedules for Potomac, Virginia?
  • There is a man nicknamed "Stonewall" / "Stonewall Jackson" in Company C who's stories are shared by both Corporal Gooding and Private Wilson in their writing; who is he?
  • Who is Professor Bond, the band instructor?
  • Who is E. "Nall" mentioned in the Company A May 1863 Remarks?
  • In the Long Island, Boston Harbor recruitment records, who are Alfred Wilson of Albany, New York; Charles Whetland of Jamaica; and William Young of Wilmington, North Carolina? They don't appear in the Roster in Emilio's appendices. Did they serve? Seems they did, but were omitted from the roster.
  • Who is Peter Jones (maybe James or Janis instead) in the 1890 West Chester, Pennsylvania Veterans Schedules? The form lists his service as Company E in the 54th Massachusetts, but he's absent from the McKay roster in Emilio. Could he be a soldier of the 54th USCT from Arkansas?
  • Who is William Butler mentioned as a Private in Co. H in the 1864 POW list?

Mysteries Solved

Move questions with answers into this section as mysteries are solved.

  • Who is drummer Thomas E. Platuts? mentioned in the Company A June 1865 Remarks? Also mentioned as "Thomas E. Platner" of Co. A in the Special Orders RE: Drum Major.
  • Was Philip Piner transferred to the 55th Massachusetts or no?
    • Yes, to Company B. Mustered in 25 November 1864, mustered out 29 August 1865.

In Their Own Words

"We are all destitute of clothes, and some have not as much as a shoe upon their feet, but when we look at the suffering condition of the poor slaves, we can stand all: only give us our liberty and freedom, and we will give our lives for liberty, for we love that well-known sound."
- First Sergeant John H. W. N. Collins, Company H

Went through the 207 pages of the 1890 Veterans Schedules for Toledo, Ohio; looking for Private Anson Prator of Company D. No luck finding Private Prator, but ...

54th Mass soldiers:

  • p. 68 Private Lewis J. Monroe Smith, Co. I / K - possibly George W. Smith of Co. K?
  • p. 161 Private Albert Johnson, Co. K? (also served with Co. I of the 14th USCT) - no ideas yet. No one by that in name int he regiment, and no alias given in the veterans schedule. The only Albert Johnson in the 55th died of disease according to Fox's roster.
  • p. 168 Private George Remley, Co. C

55th Mass soldiers:

  • p. 38, 133 Private Sampson Coswell, Co. F
  • p. 42 Private Benjamin Lyons, Co. E

  • "Dilos Arnold" is listed as 54th Mass, Co. H but I don't have any other record for him yet. He served 18 September 1863 - 15 July 1865. Maybe an alias? Nothing close in the regiment. Maybe it's 54th Mich instead?
  • William H. McClelland, Co. F searchable via HeritageQuest
  • John White, Co. F searchable via HeritageQuest
  • William M. "John" Johnson, Co. H searchable via HeritageQuest

(Some, frustratingly, are completely illegible.)

Robert H. Lowe of the 55th Massachusetts is listed.

Went through all 93 pages of the 1890 US Veterans Schedules for Salem, Massachusetts looking for 54th soldiers.

Not the best record-keeping, so there may still yet be 54th soldiers hidden in those pages. I just scanned for the telltale "54th" in the regiment column.

There's a John Anderson listed as Co. E, possibly 54th Mass., but no match for regiment + company. There are other men by the same in other companies, though.

There's a John S. Washington listed as Co. F in the 54th Mass., but the Washingtons in Co. F are David and Peter Washington. Mystery to solve! (Side note: his veterans schedules also has four 55th Mass. soldiers on the same page.)

And bless the person who made most of these records and their neat and easy-to-read penmanship!

No matches.

Went through all 24 pages of the 1890 US Veterans Schedules for Charleston, South Carolina looking for 54th soldiers.

There is a Corporal Howard Thomas noted as 54th Mass, Co. C; enlisted 18 April 1861; discharged 1 July 1865. Haven't identified anyone who would be a match, and the enlistment date is two years too early. Probably an error; maybe the 55th Massachusetts instead?
