George H. Cooper (military alias George W. Johnson) was born about 1842 in Frederick County[1], Maryland. He served with the famous 54th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry during the American Civil War.
During the Civil War, he served as a Private in Company B of the 54th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry, the first regiment in the Untied States made up entirely of enlisted men of color. He was 21 years old, single and working as a farmer when he enlisted on 11 March 1863 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Mustered out 20 August 1865 with his regiment.
He was active with the Grand Army of the Republic (G. A. R.) Post #255 in New York City after the war.
