First Sergeant in the all-black 54th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry regiment, Company G. Enlisted from Cincinnati, OH on 14 April 1863. He was 24, married and working as a barber. Wounded on 18 July 1863 at Fort Wagner. Discharged 6 April 1864.

There is a John Morgan, age 21, "Mulatto", working as a barber in Cincinnati, Ohio in the household of Sarah J. Morgan, age 52, in the 1860 census. Maybe the same?
