Military Service and Death

Private in the all-black 54th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry regiment, Company I. Enlisted on 22 April 1863 from Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. He was 19 years old, single and working as a laborer when he enlisted. He was killed on 9 October 1863 in the trenches in front of Fort Wagner.
