James Jameson was born about 1839[1] in Ithaca[2], New York. He served with the famous 54th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry during the American Civil War.
During the Civil War, he served as a Private in Company H of the 54th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry of the Union Army, the second[3] regiment in the United States made up entirely of enlisted men of color. He was about 24 years old, single and working as a barber when he enlisted on 29 April 1863 from Ithaca, New York. Mustered out 20 August 1865 with his regiment.[1]
Company H participated in the Battle of Sol Legare Island on 16 July 1863, the Second Battle of Fort Wagner on 18 July 1863[4], the Battle of Olustee on 20 February 1864, and the Battle of Honey Hill on 30 November 1864.[1]
