Archibald was born in 1794 or 1795 in Herring Cove, Halifax County, Nova Scotia to Neil Darroch and Margaret (maiden name unknown), and was baptised April 19th 1795 at Mather's Church (aka the Protestant Dissenting Church, later known as St. Matthew's Presbyterian) in Halifax.[1]
In 1819, Henry Latter of Herring Cove petitioned to the crown to be granted title for himself and his widowed daughter Catherine (Latter) Philpot on Herring Cove properties that Latter claimed should be theirs; on the petition Latter testified that he had previously warned Archibald and his brother Angus Darrach that they were building on property Latter believed belonged to his now deceased son-in-law James Philpot.[2] (Through a series of crown petitions, it seems Henry Latter was in dispute with several neighbours about ownership of properties in Herring Cove. It's likely Latter did not prevail, and the Darrach brothers were not displaced.)
Archibald married Ellen King on an unknown date prior to 1820. They had 10 known children together in Herring Cove between 1820 and 1846.
In 1838, Archibald purchased some shoreline land in Herring Cove for 12 pounds from a man named John Keliher.[3]
Archibald passed away in 1870 in Herring Cove,[4] and is buried in St. James Cemetery.[5][6] In his will, he bequeathed his shoreline Herring Cove property (containing his former home) along with his fishing gear to sons Frederick & Archibald; to his wife Ellen the property bought from John Keliher in 1838; and to his daughters, 5 pounds each.[7]
Research Notes
Daughter Sarah's death record incorrectly notes that Archibald was born in Scotland.[8]
"Mary was the daughter of Archibald Darroch (Darrach) and Ellen King. Archibald was the son of Neil Darroch, the first of the family in Herring Cove, and his wife Margaret McEachern."[9]
Records show a variety of spellings for the surname of this family, including Durra, Darrow, Darroch, Darrach, Darach, Darrah, etc.
