Biography

Amelia was born about 1830 in Herring Cove, Nova Scotia to Archibald Darrach and Ellen King.

She married Redmond Brackett in 1850 in Herring Cove.^[1] She was baptised into the Catholic faith the same day.^[2] They had 6 known children together in Herring Cove and Halifax between 1850 and 1860. Redmond died sometime during 1861-64.

Amelia remarried to widower James Edwards in 1864 in Halifax County.^[3] They had 3 known children together between 1865 and 1874.

Amelia passed away in 1896 in Halifax.^[4][5]

Research Notes

Amelia's parents are not explicitly named on any known primary record, but they are inferred by her being named on an 1881 sale of property in Herring Cove^[6] that had been previously owned by Ellen (King) Darrach, who had died intestate, and thus the property had been inherited by her 8 surviving children (and their spouses).

Amelia's year of birth is given variably on records, including the censuses; the age given for her (and husband James) on the 1881 census is an outlier and assumed incorrect, as it would be too young for her children's ages (born between 1850 and 1874). The earliest known age reference for her is her 1850 baptism when she is stated to be twenty years old, so a birth date of about 1830 is most likely to be accurate.
