Biography

This profile represents the wife of John Drewry Carroll and mother of his children.

Nancy King born on 8 May 1779 at Ashe, North Carolina, United States. [citation needed]

Nancy King and John Carroll were married on or shortly after 21 Dec 1797 (date of marriage bond) in Stokes County, North Carolina.[1]

The family had moved to Tennessee by 1825. [2]

According to unsourced FamilySearch trees they had several children together:

  1. Morton Carroll,
  2. Drury, Jr.
  3. Sarah Nancy (Carroll) Low,
  4. Martha (Carroll) Hembree [3]
  5. William Carroll
  6. Charles Carroll [4]

The 1850 U.S. Census lists the couple in Scott County, Tennessee. [5]

Drewry passed away on 16 AUG 1852 Campbell County, Tennessee, USA. Nancy died about 1865. [citation needed]

Research Notes

Disputed Native Origins

A previous version of this profile claimed, without sources, that she was the daughter of Peter Carroll Man Who Tells Stories Smokey Cherokee KING, a Cherokee, and his wife Mother Who Has Empty Heart Cherokee King. [citation needed]

There is no documentation that names "Nancy King" or "Nancy Carroll" as a Cherokee person. She did not live in the Cherokee Nation. The family does not appear on the 1835 Cherokee census (the area where they lived was outside of the Cherokee Nation. [6] Neither she nor any of her descendants appear on any Cherokee rolls or records. She does not appear on the 1848 Mullay, [7] the 1851 Siler, [8] or the 1852 Chapman [9] Rolls of Cherokee east of the Mississippi.

She is not the woman on the 1850 census in Cherokee County, North Carolina. [10]

As stated above, Nancy and Drewry were enumerated on the 1850 U.S. Census in Tennessee. [5]

The only positive identification of Drewry Carroll's wife is as “Nancy” on the 1850 census (Scott County, Tennessee) which says they were both born in North Carolina.. The years listed in the “marriage” column suggest that they were married in 1794.

Disputed Death Date

A previous version of this profile claimed, without source, that Nancy died 13 Jul 1839 in Campbell Co., Tennessee. Unless Drury Carroll had two wives both born in North Carolina c. 1780, the death date of 1839 must be incorrect since Nancy was alive in 1850.

Smokey King Thompson-1 and King-64643 appear to represent the same person because: Same vitals. Same spouse (per narrative). Use King-64643 as target (resulting) profile. Thank you

Nancy (King?) Carroll was not Cherokee. She is not the person on an 1850 census in North Carolina, she is on the census in Tennessee with her husband. Everyone in this family is listed as white on the census. The woman on the 1850 census in North Carolina (although it isn't her) is white.

I've updated the bio. I will ask Eowyn to change the LNAB to King, which is supported by the 1797 marriage bond.

The census record attached to this profile is for a different woman. In 1850 Drewry and Nancy Carrol were living in Scott County, Tennessee: "United States Census, 1850," database with images, FamilySearch (https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:MCD1-XYJ : 4 April 2020), Drewry Carrol, Scott county, Scott, Tennessee, United States; citing family 240, NARA microfilm publication M432 (Washington, D.C.: National Archives and Records Administration, n.d.).

"United States Census, 1850," database with images, FamilySearch (https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:MCD1-XYV : 4 April 2020), Nancy Carrol in household of Drewry Carrol, Scott county, Scott, Tennessee, United States; citing family 240, NARA microfilm publication M432 (Washington, D.C.: National Archives and Records Administration, n.d.).

The attached census image is for a woman named Nancy King; The Nancy King of this profile married John Drewry Carrol in 1797.

There are two Nancy's we got them straighten out. Yes this woman existed and there were books written about her and not all Indians lived in North Carolina they lived everywhere in the area we live. They had also made their homes in Smokey Junction and New River area, the land was divided up different then. However they left what was known as North Carolina and came to Tennesse. So all this has been straighten out and taken care of thank you.

Hi, This shows up on profile close, please check dates on connected profiles.

Warning: Check the data. A child's birth date (Cherokee-146 born 8 May 1779) should not be before a parent is six years old (father Smokey Cherokee KING-1 born 2 Jan 1890) . A child's death date (Cherokee-146 died 13 Jul 1839) should not be before a parent is seven years old (father Smokey Cherokee KING-1 born 2 Jan 1890) . A child's birth date (Cherokee-146 born 8 May 1779) should not be more than 110 years before their father's death date (Smokey Cherokee KING-1 died 2 Dec 1910) . This would mean their father lived to be well over 110.
