Biography

William Graham was born at Cote 27 May 1793 ^[1], son of David Graham^{[1] [2]}and Jane Smith^[2].

William married Magaret Charters^[3][4] on 9 Jan 1818^[3][4] in Langholm, Dumfriesshire, Scotland, United Kingdom^[3].^[4]

They had 12 children together :

William died 10 Jul 1878^[2]in Eskdalemuir^[2] and was burried in Watcarrick Churchyard^[2].

• Quoted from the Note on the Pedigree Resource File at https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/2:2:9MD7-DQ1 (unsourced): "When his father died, he farmed Cote with the David Smith family until at least 1820, when the Smiths left. He then became the tenant farmer at Cote. A descendant wrote of him: "When he got Cote to himself, he was not long in it when he married, and his brothers and sisters had to look after themselves. He was a fool at farming. He was away twenty-eight years and James, his son got Cote. He attained some fame in the newspapers by journeying to the north of Scotland to identify the man who murdered a pedlar boy somewhere in the middle of Eskdale or Ettrick. Both had stopped overnight in the Graham's barn and later the man had murdered the boy to get his money. A monument to commemorate this event stands near Eskdalemuir Church." In December 1817, he married Margaret Stewart Charters whom they baptised in Eskdalemuir 31 January 1796. Margaret was a poet of no mean order. In one of her poems she called the family "four times three". The old family Bible at Cote in his great grandson David's family dating from 1817 gives the order of their twelve children. William died at Cote on 18 July 1878, aged 85. Their mother, Margaret died at Cote on 11 July 1850, aged seventy-four years. They buried both at Watcarrick Churchyard. The twelve children of William and Margaret had about 65-70 children of their own. Approximately seven emigrated to the United States of America, and fourteen were born in USA".
• There were two William Grahams born in Eskdalemiur between 1792 and 1793. The other William^[17] is the son of Thomas Graham^[17] and Sophia Bell^[17].
