Biography

William was born at Cote Farm, Eskdalemuir, Dumfries-shire, Scotland about1792[1][2], son of Thomas Graham[1][2] and Sophia Bell [1][2].

Research Notes

  • The original image of the OPR Birth register has no date next to the record for William son of Thomas and Sophia. The preceding entry is dated 28 March (no year given). The subsequent entry is dated Jan 24, 1796. The handwriting on William's record and the 24 Jan 1796 entry for Margaret Holiday (John Holiday/Margt. Huggan is the same, and both were baptized by Mr. Brown. The other William, on the next page of the same Old Parish Register, was son of D. Graham and born 27/05/1793. The enties in this OPR are not in date order. RWG.
  • There is another William Graham (1793-1878) also born in Eskdalemuir, son of David Graham and Jane Smith, who is easy to confuse with this William. Use caution when making changes, particularly to spouses, parents and children.

There is another Thomas Graham related to this family and so it's looking like this guy may have been born 1775 according to some researchers. I think he may not be the father of George Graham my great great great grandfather either. I'll have a good look at it tomorrow. https://www.familysearch.org/tree/pedigree/landscape/KFRM-28L

I believe Thomas to be born 1763 the father of William if that helps. ie. from Family Search Tree Thomas Graham, fifth child of William and Margaret was born 16 September 1763 at Cote and was baptised the following Sabbath by the Revd. John Scotland, Presbyterian minister in Eskdalemuir from 1763 to 1768. He married about 1792 Sophia Bell and had seven children all baptised by Revd. Dr. William Brown, Presbyterian Minister in Eskdalemuir 1792 - 1835. For an understanding of Parish conditions during this period, you should read Dr. Brown's two accounts in "Dumfriesshire Parishes Ancestral Homes". Thomas kept a general merchandise shop at Cote, one of three shops in the parish. Of the seven children they give only the first as the child of Thomas Graham and Sophia Bell, the rest as only the Children of Thomas Graham and no other. Thomas Graham appears in the Parish Register at this time. The three Margaret's apparently named after their Graham Grandmother, suggests that the first two died at infancy, we made no further research.

After some digging around in the Eskdalemuir Memorial inscriptions, ScotlandsPeople OPR, and other places, focusing on date and place for separating the various Thomases, Williams, and Johns In Dumfriesshire, I came to agree with you on this Thomas' family tree. I have documented what I can on profiles that either one of us is the profile manager. The biggest upside is that there are far fewer half-siblings now, and the generation gap between generations is more consistent. If you disagree with any of my changes, please let me know so we can work out the appropriate changes. The Graham line in Canonbie and the one in Eskdalemuir seemed to be a bit tangled up before.
