The First World War began when Britain and Germany went to war in August 1914, and Prime Minister Andrew Fisher's government pledged full support for Britain.
On 25 April 1915, members of the Australian Imperial Force (AIF) landed at Gallipoli together with troops from New Zealand, Britain, and France. This began a campaign that ended with the evacuation of troops on 19 and 20 December 1915. Following Gallipoli, Australian forces fought campaigns on the Western Front and in the Middle East.
Although the Gallipoli Campaign failed in its military objectives, the Australian and New Zealanders actions during the Campaign left us with a powerful legacy, the creation of what became known as the "Anzac Legend", an important part of the identity of both Australia and New Zealand.
After four and a half months of training near Cairo, the Australians departed by ship for the Gallipoli peninsula, with troops from New Zealand, Britain, and France. The Australians landed at what became known as ANZAC Cove on 25 April 1915. During the early days of the campaign, the allies tried to break through Turkish lines, while the Turks tried to drive the allied troops off the peninsula. Attempts on both sides ended in failure and the ensuing stalemate continued for the remainder of 1915. The most successful operation of the campaign was the evacuation of troops on 19 and 20 December, under cover of a comprehensive deception operation. As a result, the Turks were unable to inflict more than a very few casualties on the retreating force.
Fromelles 1916 where Australians suffered 5,533 casualties in 24 hours. By the end of the year about 40,000 Australians had been killed or wounded on the Western Front. In 1917 a further 76,836 Australians became casualties in battles, such as Bullecourt, Messines, and the four-month campaign around Ypres, known as the battle of Passchendaele.
The campaign began in 1916 with Australian troops participating in the defence of the Suez Canal and the allied reconquest of the Sinai peninsula. In the following year, Australian and other allied troops advanced into Palestine and captured Gaza and Jerusalem; by 1918 they had occupied Lebanon and Syria. On 30 October 1918 Turkey sued for peace.
Australians also served at sea and in the newly formed flying corps. The Royal Australian Navy (RAN), under the command of the Royal Navy, made a significant contribution early in the war, when HMAS Sydney destroyed the German raider Emden near the Cocos Islands in November 1914. The Great War was the first armed conflict in which aircraft were used; about 3,000 Australian airmen served in the Middle East and France with the Australian Flying Corps, mainly in observation capacities or providing infantry support.
Of the 232 Australian prisoners of war captured by the Turks, nearly half were light horsemen captured in Sinai and Palestine, others who were captured at Gallipoli, were members of the Australian Flying Corps, or were crew of the submarine AE2. The history of Australian involvement in WWI rarely mentions the prisoners of war (P.O.W.). Only 325 ANZACs were captured by the Turks and one in three never returned from captivity. The death of Australian P.O.Ws in Ottoman, Turkey, was mainly due to maltreatment. The Australians were used for slave labour in the Taurus Mountains to dig tunnels, and work as pack animals to construct railroads. The Australian soldiers were captured at Gallipoli, in the Sinai-Palestine, as sailors from the submarine AE2 in the Sea of Marmara, and airmen, members of the Australian Flying Corps captured in Mesopotamia. In all, 3,850 Australians were captured by the Germans on the Western Front between 1916 and 1918. Nine per cent of these prisoners died in captivity. A total of 395 Australians died during captivity in the First World War. When the first Australian prisoners of war were taken by the Germans in July 1916, a separate department of the Australian Red Cross Society (ARCS) was formed to take care of them. The ARCS despatched 395,695 food parcels and 36,339 clothing parcels.
Australian women volunteered for service in auxiliary roles, as cooks, nurses, drivers, interpreters, munitions workers, and skilled farm workers. While the government welcomed the service of nurses, it generally rejected offers from women in other professions to serve overseas. Australian nurses served in Egypt, France, Greece, and India, often in trying conditions or close to the front, where they were exposed to shelling and aerial bombardment.
The Australian Army Nursing Service was formed in 1902. A total of 2139 served abroad, of whom 25 died. They attended to all wounded Australians in all major campaigns including Egypt, Salonika (Greece), Lemnos Island (off Gallipoli), England and France.
On 25 March 1915, a cable was received asking for twelve nurses, and for them to be ready to sail on 31 March 1915. The nurses selected sailed from Wellington aboard the Ulimaroa, on 1 April 1915, and from Australia, on 13 April 1915, as members of the Australian Army Nursing Services (AANS).
It is interesting to note that these nurses were certified in an official capacity to the NZANS and on arrival in Australia, attested again to serve with the AANS. Therefore these nurses were attested to two countries at the same time. Australian women who served with this unit. 2139 served abroad 364 nurses assigned for duty in British military hospitals at Salonika in Greece 320 nurses in India from the AANS 423 served in Australia 388 were decorated 25 Deaths - Australian Army Nursing Service (AANS)
6 July 1892 - 19 May 1915 John (Jack)Simpson Kirkpatrick (6 July 1892 – 19 May 1915), who served under the name John Simpson, was a stretcher bearer with the Australian and New Zealand Army Corps (ANZAC) during the Gallipoli Campaign in World War I after landing at Anzac Cove on 25 April 1915, he obtained a donkey and began carrying wounded British Empire soldiers from the frontline to the beach, for evacuation he continued this work for three and a half weeks, often under fire, until he was killed Jack Simpson and his Donkey are a key part of the "Anzac legend". What is the best way to acknowledge the service of veterans of WW1, besides just mentioning it in the profile? Should we add them to the Anzac WW1 category or add them in the table below? What is the correct coding for whichever of those options is the best? Thanks so much for your assistance Gillian
