Military

Harold Davey is a Military Veteran.
Served in the Australian Commonwealth Military Force 1914-1918
Australian Naval & Military Expeditionary Force

Harold served in the Australian Commonwealth Military Force during The Great War (later known as the First World War). [3] Upon enlistment on 11th August 1914, [4] Harold was posted to the 1st Battalion, Australian Naval and Military Expeditionary Force (Tropical Unit), D Company, which promptly embarked [5] on 19th August 1914 aboard HMAT A35 Berrima for German New Guinea and Melanesia to capture the German colonies and ships, and destoy their communications. [6] One might question the haste that recruits were sent on this mission, however, by Harold's attestation papers it is noted that he had two years service with an Australian Infantry Battalion 'under his belt'. Because of the urgency the AN&MEF soldiers were mostly experienced. Mission accomplished in good time, AN&MEF battalions known as "Tropical Force" because they had been specially raised for service in the tropics, remained in German New Guinea as a very small garrison force. They returned to Australia in August 1918.

Florence gave her address as 'care of' her mother, New Street, Willoughby, when being listed as next of kin. As they had only married the previous year, the couple may have been living with Mrs Lutherborrow.

Occupation

Harold worked as a Blacksmith.

Harold completed a four year apprenticeship as a blacksmith under a Harold Davey, prior to the First World War. [7]

He was working as a tram conductor at the time of his enlistment, and returned to this work after the war.

Death

Harold passed away on 4th February 1953 at Chatswood. [8]
