The 1st Battalion, Australian Naval and Military Expeditionary Force (AN&MEF) was raised in Australia upon the outbreak of the First World War to seize and destroy German wireless stations in German New Guinea in the south-west Pacific so that they could not be used to warn Germany of Allied movements in the Pacific or threaten merchant shipping in the region. The battalion was commanded by Lieutenant Colonel Russell Watson. Following the successful capture of German possessions in the region, the 1st Battalion returned to Australia whilst further battalions of the AN&MEF were formed to provide occupation forces for the duration of the war. Many returned soldiers of the 1st Battalion subsequently transferred to the Australian Imperial Force and served in the Middle East and Europe.
