William was born in 1891 at Makotuku, Ormondville. He was the son of Edward Clemens and Mary Ann Jones.
At age 5 in 1896, he attended Pukehinau School. In July 1902 he was enrolled at Horoeka school in Masterton. (admission 28 July) His school life ended soon after this and William left to work on the family family farm.
In WWI, at age 20 he enlisted, Serial no 46688 with the Canterbury Infantry, 24th reinforcements, rank Private. William saw 2 1/2 years military service and over 1 1/2 years of this was spent on active service in the Western European Theatre.
He was wounded on 2 occasions on active duty and was later declared medically unfit. William was discharged from the Army on May 27, 1919 and received the British war medal.
Postwar, he worked as a Labourer and later as a Bus Driver.
He married May Cunningham in 1939 and they had 4 children.
William Edward Arthur Clemens died age 70 in 1961 and is buried at Mangatera Cemetery - RSA section. [1]
