Sister Ethel May Bolton ARRC was born in 1886 in Gippsland, Victoria (Australia). She was the eldest child of Lieutenant Colonel (later Brigadier General) William Bolton and Jane Gillies. [1]
Ethel served as a Head Sister in the Australian Army Nursing Service in The Great War; enlisted 3rd April 1915;[2] [3] embarked for overseas service with the 1st Australian General Hospital on 13th April 1915 at Sydney aboard HMAT Kyarra A55;[4] returned to Australia 13th March 1919. She was awarded the Associate Royal Red Cross for 'exceptional services in military nursing'; gazetted 3rd June 1919.[5]
She passed away on 30th June 1971 in Ballarat, Victoria and her ashes were spread in the Ballarat General Cemetery. There is a memorial in the Ballarat Base Hospital Sisters who served King & Country.[6]
