Walther. [3] Perth Fri 4 Aug 1916
Died of wounds on July 27. Captain Bernie Walther, dearly-loved and only son of J. G. and Bertha Walther, of Surrey Chambers, Perth and brother of Melvina, Adelaide and Mrs Walter Exley (Winnie), Victoria Park; aged 21 years. His duty done.
Captain Bernhardt H. Walther, [4] Murtoa. Fri 11 Aug 1916
whose death was briefly announced in our last, died on 28th July from wounds received in France. His father, Mr. J. G. Walther, of Perth, W.A., is the oldest son of Mr. and Mrs. J. F. Walther of Murtoa. He left here with his family 16 years ago, after his hand had been mangled in a chaffcutter, and has since been engaged as caretaker at Surry Chambers, Perth.
Captain Walther, who was promoted from Lieut, to Captain on 19th March last, was born at Murtoa, and ultimately
entered the Government service in West Australia. As showing the high estimation in which deceased was held in the Colonial Secretary's Department, where he was employed, an official memorandum by the classifier, dated 1st January last, certifies:—"There is a vacancy for a class "F " officer in this branch, and I recommend that the position be given to Mr. B. H. Walther who is now eligible therefor.
Mr. Walther is now serving us a lieutenant at tho front, where I am pleased to record that his services have been recognised by promotion to commissioned rank. He is yet but a boy and it is gratifying to know that this young officer, who distinguished himself by his services in this branch, has distinguished himself in a greater degree in the higher services of his country." Capt. Walther was only 21 years of age, when his promising life ended in the service of King and country. Great sympathy is extended to his grandfather and grandmother, who are old and respected members of our community.
