Biography

Cecil William Stobie was the son of Margery McGregor and William John Stobie.

His early childhood was spent in Hawera until the family's move to Motueka.

Cecil belonged to the Takaka Athletic Club and was well known for his ability as 'scratch man' in all the mile running events.

He belonged to B Company, 12th Regiment of Takaka.

Cecil enlisted WWI - rank Sergeant - serial no 6/2764 - 1st Battalion with the Canterbury Regiment, 6th Reinforcements.

He embarked August 14 1915 to Eygpt disembarking at Alexandria. He was appointed Temp Lance Corporal in January 1916.

Cecil received the Distinguished Conduct Medal during operations on 'Welsh' and 'Rob Avis' ridges from September 28 to October 1 1918. On September 29 when the enemy attacked the right flank of his company which was in the air, he put up strong resistance and although wounded in the face and both arms, continued to direct his men against the enemy causing them to retire.

He received his discharge from the Army 4 March 1919.

During WWII Cecil was a Captain (Temp) in the Home Guard, Golden Bay Battalion. He resigned his commission April 30 1942 due to his employment at the Tarakohe Cement Works. The Cement Works were an essential Industry which required considerable night work and week-end duties leaving him little spare time to fully commit to the Home Guard.
