Cecil William Stobie was the son of Margery McGregor and William John Stobie.
His early childhood was spent in Hawera until the family's move to Motueka.
Cecil belonged to the Takaka Athletic Club and was well known for his ability as 'scratch man' in all the mile running events.
He belonged to B Company, 12th Regiment of Takaka.
Cecil enlisted WWI - rank Sergeant - serial no 6/2764 - 1st Battalion with the Canterbury Regiment, 6th Reinforcements.
He embarked August 14 1915 to Eygpt disembarking at Alexandria. He was appointed Temp Lance Corporal in January 1916.
Cecil received the Distinguished Conduct Medal during operations on 'Welsh' and 'Rob Avis' ridges from September 28 to October 1 1918. On September 29 when the enemy attacked the right flank of his company which was in the air, he put up strong resistance and although wounded in the face and both arms, continued to direct his men against the enemy causing them to retire.
Cecil's awards were- Distinguished Conduct Medal, 1914-1915 Star, British War Medal, Victory Medal, NZ War Service Medal
He received his discharge from the Army 4 March 1919.
Postwar, Cecil worked as a Farmer at Takaka and in 1925 married Charlotte Hunter at the Reefton Presbyterian Church.
During WWII Cecil was a Captain (Temp) in the Home Guard, Golden Bay Battalion. He resigned his commission April 30 1942 due to his employment at the Tarakohe Cement Works. The Cement Works were an essential Industry which required considerable night work and week-end duties leaving him little spare time to fully commit to the Home Guard.
In the 1950's he was employed as a Bookseller & Stationer and moved to Motupipi.
Cecil died age 68 and is buried at Rototai cemetery in the Tasman district. Probate of his will September 1960.[1]
