Biography

Acadian Flag
Henriette (Williams) LaBelle is a descendant of an Acadian

Henriette Williams was born December 30, 1849 in Cocagne, New Brunswick.[1][2] She was the firstborn child of Joseph Williams and Marguerite Cormier

In the 1861 Census of Canada, Henriette lived her family in the parish of Dundas, Kent county, New Brunswick.[3] Her father Joseph was working as a farmer and Henriette, age 11, was one of 9 children. She and 2 of her siblings were in school.

In the 1871 Census of Canada, Henriette lived with her family in Dundas.[4]. In this census their surname was written as "Guillaume" (the French version of William). The census shows that her parents were born in New Brunswick, their religion was Catholic, and they were of French origin. Her father's profession was now teacher and Henriette, age 20, was working as a day labourer. It also notes that her mother was unable to read or write.

On June 23, 1873 in Cocagne, Henriette married her husband Pascal Lebel at the age of 23.[5][6] Their parents are not named in the marriage record. By 1875, the couple had moved to Minneapolis, Minnesota where their daughter Alice was born.

Children of Pascal Lebel and Henriette Williams:

  1. Marie Marguerite Lebel, born 25 Dec 1873 in Cocagne. Died young.
  2. Alice Marie LaBelle, born 19 Jun 1875 in Minneapolis.
  3. Frank Clarence LaBelle, born 23 Jun 1878 in Minneapolis.

On May 4, 1879, Henriette died in Minneapolis of tuberculosis when she was only 29 years old.[7][8] After her death, her children Alice and Frank, aged 3 and 1, were raised by Pascal's parents Francois and Marcelline Lebel.[9]

Research Notes

Even though Henriette's parents are not named in her marriage record, we know that she is the daughter of Joseph Williams and Marguerite Cormier because they are named in her death record, and the age in her death record matches the year on her baptism record.

Her name is written as "Hannah" Labell in her death record but her matching Find A Grave entry (which was originally created using cemetery records) has her name as Henrietta. Also, their daughter Alice's 1875 birth record from Minneapolis shows her parents are Paschal and Henriette LaBel, so we know this couple moved to Minneapolis.
