Biography

Bernardino Verro is Notable.

Bernardo Verro is born 3 July 1866 and baptized the next day. He is the son of Don Gioachino Verro and Donna Giuseppa Ala. His godparents are Bernardo Mancuso and Giuseppa Sclafani, a married couple.

Bernardino is a syndicalist and politician involved in the Fasci Siciliani, a popular socialist movement, from 1891 to 1894.

Verro forms a republican-socialist circle on 7 Feb 1892 with Calogero Milone, Biagio Gennaro, Francesco Puccio, Liborio Termini, Angelo Provenzano, and Francesco Streva, called La Nuova Eta’.^[1] The circle is made up of men with close Mafia connections: Milone and Streva each have at least one mafioso brother. Puccio is the compare of Mariano Colletto, a capo in the local Mafia.

To assist in a labor strike he is leading, and to protect himself from harm, Verro becomes a member of the Fratuzzi, the Mafia in Corleone. He breaks away from them in 1893 over another labor strike.

On 2 December 1896, Verro arrives in New York on the SS Oregon, where he is invited by SLP to organize Italians.^[2]

In 1914, Bernardino becomes the first socialist mayor of Corleone.

He is killed by the Mafia on 3 November 1915. Although there is a trial, no one is found guilty of his murder.
